A low point for Disney.

This movie was obviously a big production, and some serious money was spent on it. The choreography is fine. The acting is good.

However, the story and script are terrible. The dragon looks beyond ridiculous, as it was very obviously overlaid onto the film stock in post production. There are a few scenes where the invisible dragon is moving things, but they don't look very convincing either. This should have been a purely animated film, where the contrast would be less jarring.

This film was made around the same time as The Rescuers, but it's nowhere near as good as that film.

Really this was a low point for Disney. Disney's live action films have always been hit or miss. However as bad as films like That Darn Cat and The Strongest Man in the World were, they had a sense of their own ridiculousness. Many actually had a wry and quick sense of humor about them. This film lacked that brevity of wit, and is a chore to watch.

I haven't seen it in years, but I loved this movie when I was a kid. Not as much as Star Wars, but it was the first Disney movie and the first musical I ever enjoyed. However bad it may seem now, to a kid born in the early 70s it was good.

reply

I'm with you. As a '90s kid I can say that I had this movie and enjoyed it during my adolescent's. Obviously it looked as out of date as Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, but I enjoyed watching it every once in a while. Other than the Passamaquoddy number on YouTube I haven't seen this since my childhood. Will it hold up for me today as much as it did then? NO! Yet, that doesn't matter. What matters is that even two decades after its initial release I enjoyed this movie during my childhood.

My car is fast, my teeth is shiny, I tell all the girls they can kiss my heinie!

I saw it at Radio City Music Hall in NYC, and I have fond memories of this film. It was a child's movie and enjoyable.

reply

Well, it is a Disney film. In the 70s they were still using 1960s and 1950s technology, and the scripts hadn't caught up with the times.

I still thought it was decent. Not something I'd see again though.

reply

No, TODAY is the low point for Disney, they're remaking this movie next year and I'm not holding my breath it'll be able to hold up compared to this original classic.

reply

The original isn't a classic-it was a huge bomb when released and never was fully embarked in its many reissues.

reply

The original is def a classic- what movies have you been watching? It scored 2 Oscar nominations, and set the bar for future live-action animated musicals. Just because you didn't like it doesn't mean a hill of beans. Grow the hell up.

reply

Grow up? You're the one who had a hissy fit because someone disagreed with you! General opinion is that the original is NOT a great film; and from what I hear, the tenants is an improvement. Why on earth you would be so aggressive over differing opinions on a film I really don't know.

reply

"Tenants" should read "remake"! :P

reply

no, its not-the songs are pedestrian and Helen Reddy cant act

reply

I was born in '85 and this was my absolute favorite film growing up. I can't remember the first time I saw it- it was always there. I'm 31 now and it still holds up for me.

reply

Yes it was its released under walt disney classics banner

reply

As a kid, I loved this movie. I'd watch it every time it aired on tv.

reply

Are you kidding me? This was nowhere even close to a low point for Disney. Have you seen Superdad? Outside of Kurt Russell's shirtless volleyball scenes and the title song by Bobby Goldsboro, it's totally unwatchable. The Herbie movies declined in quality after the death of Bill Walsh and the retirements of Robert Stevenson and Don DaGradi. And while the worst of Walt and the worst of Ron Miller are merely bland and forgettable, the worst of the Eisner and Iger eras are toxic. And while there are some obvious production errors in this film, they are fewer in number compared to other Disney films of this era. Overall, it holds up better than a lot of Disney films from this era, and I'll gladly watch this again before I subject myself to Babes in Toyland again.

In this case, they tried to cut the film multiple times but apparently it never occurred to them that maybe putting stuff in might actually make it better, like they did with Bedknobs and Broomsticks and The Happiest Millionaire.

THE RESCUERS: 5/10
PETE'S DRAGON: 3/10

reply

Nope. You're way, way off. Neither of those films deserve anything less than a 7

reply

Interesting that you say that, because I gave THE RESCUERS DOWN UNDER a 7 and the PETE'S DRAGON remake an 8.
