Well worth the effort.

A real period piece with the authentic look and feel of New York as it faced bankruptcy in the 70's.

The original Japanese version is hard work but well worth the effort, not least for the obvious difference in policing techniques the film makers point out (just for once this is from the Japanese-centric viewpoint). It also gives an interesting perspective on the American occupation after the war which is pretty brutal.

No subtitles that I could find, but half of it is in English so you'll get the gist easily enough.

Oh and of course it has the magnificent, brilliant Yusaku Matsuda in it too - you will not believe this is the same actor as the guy in Black Rain - worth watching just for him. It might be fun to watch the two films back to back, not only for Yusaku Matsuda but because one is a Japanese-made film of a cop travelling to the USA and joining up with local police, and the other is a Hollywood film of a cop travelling to Japan and joining up with local police - both are heavily stereotyped, each from the opposite perspective...
