Ironic that I didn't remember that one. But that's probably because it was so true. Eisenhower was indeed MacArthur's aide for some time when he was "Field Marshall" of the incipient Armed Forces of the Philippine Commonwealth, a force so ill-prepared by the latter so that when the Japanese invaded, most of its soldiers were unarmed. On their initiative, Filipino ROTC cadets in Manila "looted" their own schools' armories to join MacArthur in his ignominious retreat to Bataan, later reforming as Hunter's Guerrillas after the Field Marshall escaped to Australia and Bataan fell to the invaders. The United States Armed Forces in the Far East (USAFFE) would have fared better under Ike.
