A Little Night Music - CD Soundtrack?

I stumbled on this discussion Board recently, and its great to see that many people enjoy and like this movie adaptation ( the recent DVD release , however flawed, had something to do with the renewed interest) . Mostly, in the past 3 decades, the movie has been held up as an example of a failed adaptation but I think there are many things to like about it.

What I can't see is any discussion of a release of the soundtrack on CD. Its one of those last hold-outs never to have appeared on a CD, it seems. There is a very good sounding bonus track of the Alternate movie version of The Glamorous Life on the Broadway Cast Recording CD...which bouyed expectations of an imminent release of the movie Soundtrack...but nothing?

What gives? Can anybody enlighten us? What's the hold -up? Litigation? Technology? Apathy?

reply

Anyone?

I can't imagine that it's litigation, since the Broadway cast album and the film version soundtrack were both originally released on CBS Records (hence the bonus track from the film on the CD reissue of the cast album). You're probably right that it's apathy.

Maybe there would be a greater audience for the CD if it included the numbers that were recorded but deleted before release (I think that would include "In Praise of Women" and "Liaisons"), plus Diana Rigg's solo version of "Every Day a Little Death," none of which were on the vinyl release.

Thanks DT...

With obscure ones being released so regularly, I'm baffled why this gem (IMHO) has not been released. The 30th anniversary came and went, and even the DVD is from a lesser label.

I would love to have the soundtrack! I love the movie - but it seems most people can't stand it. I haven't seen a stage version (yet), but I've always thought the movie was funny and had a great cast... AND some of the best music EVER! I own the DVD, and the quality is fairly poor. It doesn't keep me from watching it, though!

Its to the movie's credit that a small but significant number of us put up with poor quality film (DVD, VHS) and sound ( vinyl) but still enjoy it.

It has flaws but its main problem is people expect it to be one thing or another, instead of enjoying it on its own terms. I think it deserves its time in the sun someday soon.

I have an old battered vinyl copy of the soundtrack and I'd say, Content: 8.5/10 and sound 7/10. It should have been a deluxe 2 LP set !

Why no cleaned up DVD and CD? Didier Deutch - can you hear us????

BEST CD version I have heard is

A Little Night Music (1975 Original London Cast) [CAST RECORDING]

The soundtrack has at last been issued on CD and as a digital download! :) It includes four tracks not on the original LP.

Track List:
01 Overture/Night Waltz (Love Takes Time)
02 The Glamorous Life
03 Now/Soon/Later
04 You Must Meet My Wife
05 Every Day A Little Death
06 Night Waltz
07 A Weekend In The Country
08 It Would Have Been Wonderful
09 Send In The Clowns
10 Poor Old Frederick
11 Send In The Clowns (reprise/Finale
12 Every Day A Little Death (film version)
13 Night Waltz (film version)
14 End Credits (film version)

Track 11 is an orchestral track from Jonathan Tunick's brilliant underscoring. The final three tracks are versions used in the actual film, which differed from the tracks/versions included on the original LP. The CD includes a booklet with the original album notes and artwork, and new notes and production photographs.

It is available from Masterworks Broadway.
