I felt sad and angry after watching this black and white film. A beautiful nice and kind young man was totally ruined for doing nothing wrong. It was a courageous educational gay themed movie considering it was made so early on in our modern time. How unjust and vicious were we as human beings treating some other human beings with differences but with no fault? What kind of parents would send their own children away like criminals to facility of correction knowingly their child probably be treated inhumanely? Where is our compassion?
I'm outrageous knowing there is still something like this going on in every society!!

Always thought religion had a hand in the ignorance and hatred.

It's on Netflix instant view now. This is a good film. I wish they would restore it with yellow subtitles. As it is it's in black and white with white subtitles. Probably nearly 1/3 of the subtitles cannot be read.

I recently purchased it on Amazon and that version has both sets of subtitles. What a wonderful film. Both lead actors are very impressive. The storyline is great, though the movie is a bit short. I wish there had been a bit more character development. We learn very little about Martin other than he's a gay actor who goes to prison.

The world is made for those not cursed with self awareness. Bull Durham

I just watched it "instantly" from Netflix. Sad film that deserves its place as somewhat groundbreaking in queer cinema. And it is still a realistic depiction in many parts of the world today. Hopefully not in the US but still possible.

Update:

It doesn't seem to be up for streaming on Netflix now, but it is available for rent via their mail choice. The good news is that the DVD version they carry has newer, easy-to-read subtitles superimposed over the old ones.
The film is worth watching just to see Jurgen Prochnow in a gay role. Sexy.
