Why no sequel?

I have had this film on DVD for a while now and I must admit I loved it being a Spider fan, however the ending does leave room for a sequel..des anybody know if there were talks for a sequel?, maybe showing the spiders taking over other towns perhaps?

Everyone dies. How does that leave room for a sequel?

And the final 20 minutes show the spiders taking over the town.

reply

Actually, about 15 years ago, a sequel was gonna be made. William Shatner was gonna star and direct.

reply

Not necessarily. Spiders store their food. In this case the spiders were a migration like the Marabunta (fire ants) in South America, so it is conceiveable that Rack Hansen (William Shatner), et al, were able to free themselves from their caccoon, and go on to do a couple of sequels. I suspect, however, that a sequel will be an entirely different story, considering it is now 30 years later, that provides a loose link back to the original.

You can't honestly say that the spiders would restrict themselves to one town can you?? theending also showed the captives inside the lodge still well..so the ending is very much open ended.

There should definately have been a sequel.
Maybe they could still do one now, but would have to have a 70's feel to it, no point setting it 30 years later

reply

"so the ending is very much open ended."

Not really. The end clearly shows there is no escape. Shatner and crew are doomed. Most likely they starved to death or killed themselves before the spiders could break through to them.

I think the high costs and technical difficulties in managing so many spiders might have made making a sequel unattractive to the filmmakers. Besides, the slasher era had just begun: so much easier to get a guy with a mask and butcher knife...

reply

I never took it that they died. You could easily interpret the ending as the spiders having cocooned the town and migrated on. Even if not, there was the fact that the one couple had an RV parked next to the hotel. Shatner et al could have driven out of the area at that point...if the tarantulas had not infested the vehicle too.

Half million budget with 15 million return at box office for original. Hardly a huge budget.

I read an article in Fangoria magazine and they did a special feature on Kingdom of the Spiders. William Shatner tried to do a sequel in the 1980's, and it would've been a whole new storyline with new characters. He claimed he couldn't get nobody to help finance the picture. The article even pictured a teaser poster for Kingdom of the Spiders 2.

Do you still have that article?

Wikipedia mentions Cannon Films wanted to film the sequel with Shatner starring and directing, but the company went bankrupt. Too bad, Cannon made some good crap.

Good point. The ending was the most shocking part of this whole movie. Well, next to the special effects and the acting. (Is there an Oscar for Best Overacting by an Extra?) Anyway, it reminds me a little of the Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Room for a sequel, but never done, unless you count the cameo in the first remake.

One town does not a kingdom make. In order to have a kingdom, these spiders need to take over half the state, in my opinion. How hardy are spiders anyway? I mean, these were normal-sized spiders. Could they survive a nuclear blast? I've got some research to do. I'll need a screenwriter for this too. Who's good at spider dialogue? LOL.

reply

Oh please no, never! There is no need for a sequel to this horrible, horrible film. If anything they should be making a remake so maybe they'd get better actors and effects...

reply

Well if there was a sequel in the works then that answers the question that they survived the cocooning...however no sequel was made so i would assume they succumbed to the spiders eventually-that hopelessness of no escape makes the ending much more darker

reply

Movie isnt bad and its possible for them to make a sequel to the old 1970's movie... just cgi all the actors (like crow)

It makes more scense since the spiders will also be cgi as well...

I read somewhere in the early 90s that Shatner had plans to do a sequel, but when "Arachnophobia" was a hit, he decided there was no room for another spider movie. Why he didn't do one long before that, I don't know; he had 13 years. Maybe now would be a good time.

reply

Yeah for no sequel!!! What an ending. I remember the first time I saw this I could not believe they had been cocooned like that :) The ending spoke for itself. They were doomed to be in the lodge. Either they eventually died or eaten when the spiders came back to feed...So the story ends..finished..a cult classic!

reply

Yeah right but you know some people can't stand this kind of ending, they must have their happy ending at all cost
