Jane and Vanessa look too old
To be playing college students
They certainly do not! Ridiculous! Both were young women in 1977 when this movie was made. They were both 40 years old (quite young in this day and age). And I thought they looked great on the Oxford campus. Not everyone who attends college is 18.

You seem to miss the point that by the time Julia was injured, she was no longer co-ed age. She was in med school in Europe. By the time she got to Vienna, she could have been in her mid-20s. According to Hellman's bio, she would have been in her 30s when The Children's Hour debuted.
I got the impression that once Julia got to Vienna, her studies stalled since the politics were changing rapidly. She may have been doing something else at the University when the Nazis stormed it and assaulted people.
So the bulk of their story happened while they were actually grown women. The college segment was short.
They were too old. They were both 40 years old when the film was made.
