Are the two main characters lesbians?
It seems that get pretty worked up around each other.

I never understood why a character who wrote "The Children's Hour" would show such incredibly homophobia by slapping the man who accuses her of having a relationship with Julia. It's precisely this hostility that her play protests and causes the fictional character in that play to commit suicide.
It made no sense to me at all!

Thanks for such an intelligent response to my question.
shareI know what you mean but I never saw the slap as a homophobic reaction. I saw it as he was undermining a deep friendship she had with Julia as nothing more than something that was sexual when there was more to it than that...just my opinion!
I think she's the saddest girl ever to hold a martini.
Oh please. I am a SCREAMING heterosexual woman, have never been or will be anything else. Yet I have loved some women so much I couldn't wait to be in their presence and enjoy being there. I totally agree the anger at Sammy was because he was making a relationship that was very important to her into some snide, and compared it to his own incest!

Agreed! LOL
The characters did seem to have MORE than just a simple best friendship.
It was almost as if they were girlfriends vs. just friends.
I'm glad I wasn't the ONLY person who thought they acted just a little too touchy feely. LOL

They are playing friends. Not lovers.
I believe there was a mutual attraction between the two of them. Maybe that is what the "pentimento" meant. . ..something hidden beneath the layers.
