Where's Meryl Streep?

Is her part only the 15 second one in the restaurant after the debut - congratulating Lilly?

The Anne Marie character is also said to have been hot by her brother, who had sex with her, in a later flashback scene in which the Lily character dumps him overbackwards in his chair. Obviously Anne Marie and her family are supposed to represent wealthy decadence.

I just watched the scene where Anne Marie's brother reveals to Lilian that he had intercourse with her when she was 16. Ewwwwww. Even worse, he tries to make it sound like it's the same level of deviance as lesbianism!

this was omitted from the film, and I've never understood why.
I agree. I would have loved to have seen Fonda and Streep playing that scene at the end of the story when Anne-Marie claims that there was never any baby.

Anne Marie was supposed to be based on Mary McCarthy, so they say. It could be the reason for the bitter rivalry and lawsuits which followed them both to their graves.

I don't think Anne-Marie was based on McCarthy - Anne-Marie was a socialite. In the Hellman story, it's implied that the man Anne-Marie married was either the father of Julia's baby, or one of the activists Julia had worked with:

In all the years that followed I only once again saw Anne-Marie, with John Von Zimmer, in 1970, when I was teaching in Berkeley. They were in a San Francisco restaurant with six or seven other stylish-looking people, and Anne-Marie kissed me and bubbled and we exchanged addresses. Von Zimmer was silent as he stared at a wall behind my head. Neither Anne-Marie nor I did the telephoning that we said we would do the next day, but I did want very much to see Von Zimmer: I had an old question to ask, and so a few days after the meeting in the restaurant I walked around to his office. But, standing near the great Victorian house, I changed my mind. I am glad now that I didn't ask the question that almost certainly would never have been answered.

Hellman actually sowed the seeds of JULIA in a friend she called "Alice" in AN UNFINISHED WOMAN. Hellman, unfortunately, didn't keep her fabrications consistent.

really?

What shocked me is when Anne-Marie's brother is discussing the perverted incident, then why didn't she say, OH MY GOSH, and tell him how disgusting he is?!

She didn't do that until FINALLY he criticized Julia.

Well the look she was giving him said it all. That is why he jumped to make those accusations about her and Julia

In the late 70s, around the time of JULIA, I was sure that the two actresses who would have the kind of career longevity and diversity that Bette Davis and Katharine Hepburn had had were Jane Fonda and Faye Dunaway. While both are still around, neither quite fulfilled that prediction. Instead it turned out to be the fair-skinned young woman in a dark wig who shared one brief scene with Fonda.

In my case, self-absorption is completely justified.

Wikipedia reports:

Streep's first feature film role came opposite Jane Fonda in the 1977 film Julia, in which she had a small role during a flashback sequence. Most of her scenes were edited out, but the brief time on screen horrified the actress: "I had a bad wig and they took the words from the scene I shot with Jane and put them in my mouth in a different scene. I thought, I've made a terrible mistake, no more movies. I hate this business".[25]

I always wondered why the character's words didn't seem to line up with her mouth!

Tranessa,

I know what you mean! It always makes me laugh to see foreign movies where they've dubbed the actors' voices & it doesn't seem quite right when matched w/their mouth movements as far as the words NOT matching their mouths!
