Wow...

I can't believe this film isn't more widely known. It seems like a perfect bizarre masterpiece to sit on one's shelf next to A Clockwork Orange and Rocky Horror.
*goes off to introduce movie to other weird friends*

reply

I'm agree with you.
Maybe it's too modern and violent even for today, can you imagine the reactions it had caused in 1977?

reply

I'm surprised too. I don't know anyone else who's heard of it. I saw it late on night on FilmFour. It came on after Velvet Goldmine (another one of my favourite films) and I really enjoyed Jubilee.

reply

I like also Jubilee's actors, specially Johnson + Charleson who played the twins brothers!
I know that Jubilee is violent and very strange, but it has a gentle love story, a love triangle, that makes it more human!
I like Jarman's movies!

reply

I'm old enough to have seen Jubilee when it came out. I just bought a DVD of Clockwork Orange (which I also saw when it came out) so I can now stack them together on my shelf.

I think we're the green thingy

reply

I adore Jubilee, it makes me quite sad to see people slagging it off here, it's such a beautiful film, it doesn't deserve such scorn.

Question: Did you ever hurt yourself to make somebody sorry?

reply

Agreed. I have Finally seen it after seeing a grainy b/w photo of Jordan dressed as Amyl Nitrate in CREEM magazine back in'77...I knew I was going to love it when I saw Lady in Waiting appear with the dogs in the opening scene...And yes, your question makes me think...

reply

this movie is dumb and bad. enough said.

reply

Dumb and bad? What wonderfully constructive words of criticism, care to elaborate?

Question: Did you ever hurt yourself to make somebody sorry?

reply

Dumb and bad is a good place to start.
It was a selling out of the pun movement by what can be labeled as the traditional Avant Guard artisitc mentality.

What I hate is when someone tries to "transend" good genre film making ala sci fi by adding pointless pretention to it. Instead of making a move that had anything to say or anything in general to do we are given one *yawn* shocking scene after another. IT has nothing going for it but basic cuesthat let people who are to insecure to enjoy movies on their own merits but have to be told by the filmakers that they are watching "art".

Jubilee = no good

reply

Hey, how about AWFUL writing, atrocious acting (that should never be showcased on film), and ridiculous directing.

Are those constructive enough?

What a waste of a movie, a waste of my time, and film that could have been used to make something productive.

and sieve is right...the movie had NOTHING to say at all. Muddled and weak policial and social philosophy.

How old are you out of interest JUST theatre? If you'd actually been around when Jubilee was being made you might understand the vibe a little better.

Wow. You obviously are not aware that the 'punk movement' was by and large a marketing tool to begin with. The hair, the clothes, the affectations... these were all the gloss driving the youth market enonomy, as springboarded by such types as Vivianne Westwood and Malcolm McClaren. Look at bands like The Clash or The Stooges. Their statement was in the music, not in wearing safety-pinned t-shirts and blue mohawks. You do know the Sex Pistols were little different from the Monkees in the 70s or any of the boy bands form the 80s & 90s, right? Just fill in the blanks by slick marketers.
The problem was that Jubilee was using the affectations of 'punk couture' to make its point of self-indulgence, as opposed to the 'icons' of the scene who were taking themselves so so seriously. The movement you speak of was nothing more than art-school prettiness & pettiness to begin with.
Mind you, I am speaking about the 'movement', not the music itself. The movement was a marketing ploy, the same way you see hundreds of thousands of suburban kids today dressing like gangstas. They come from the 'hood just like McLaren came from Brixton, so to speak.

Hmmm?

I wanted to encourage you to try other films by a) Derek Jarman and b) other films by experimental filmmakers. It may be that what you are interested in is the music, the pumk era etc. Or it may be that what you are interested is an artist who has absolutely no interest in art that has any commercial viability. An artist who is making art simply because art has to be made. Now that's something! Enjoy!

reply

no it's not. comparing this to clockwork orange proves what an imbecile you are.
