There are good punk films and there are bad punk films...

This is one of those bad ones. The overall concept of Queen Elizabeth traveling through time is pretty good, but every thing else, espeacially the acting, is terrible. I like watching bad movies but I didn't even make it pass the first 45 minutes. This is by far the worst criterion release.

Who the *beep* is Creighton Duke?

Weird because I'd probably say that this was the only film that truly captured anything like the spirit of the age from back then. It also had genuine performers and characters like Jordan and the young Adam Ant. Bit too arty for some I guess but you really had to be there.

I think this movie did more to exploit punk rock than to actually capture its spirit. In the documentary about this movie on the criterion edition it shows how the punk scene protested this movie as what it was a shameless attempt to sell out the punk scene. It might have been punk in a controvery creates Ca$h Malcolm Mclauren kind of way but it has none of the ethos, energy and spirit of the punk "movement. It was just a series of "controversial scenesĀ©" strung together to "shock" the British middle class.

It's boring and boring is what punk in any form will always try and fight.

If you want to see a movie with some of the same common themes, was just as flawed (maybe even more so) but i think is more inspired and an alltogether better movie look for Sogo Iishi's Burst City.

Oh wake up and smell the evostick...the majority of people involved at the start of the punk scene in Britain were middle class art students and fashion designers, the working class punk ethos didn't kick in for a good couple of years with the likes of Angelic Upstarts et al. Jubilee is one man's vision, it was never meant to be a definitive representation of punk. There are those that get it and those that would rather believe that Sid and Nancy is the best punk film ever and never the twain shall meet.

Yea but the movie sucked... It was overblown overhyped sensationalist drek, that I am supposed to accept because of its pseudo artistic pretentions....

It had nothing to do with punk as I said than before but it was overlong boring and nothing but oooh lets shock people.

Did I mention Sid and Nancy at all.
No.

Do not deflect from the argument by implying that I am some kid who has only seen Sid and Nancy.

Jubilee is not a good punk film
It is not a good film period.

I suggested Burst City by Sogo Ishii not Sid and Nancy
I don't like Sid and Nancy either.

reply

Well I love Jubilee but I'm a huge fan of Derek Jarman's work in general so maybe I'm biased. I only mentioned Sid and Nancy because most people who hate Jubilee seem to suggest it when I ask them for an example of what they consider to be a 'good' punk film. Suburbia is far better.

So if the parts had been played by Liz Taylor, Laurence Olivier, Gary Oldman, Ewan McGregor and Richard Burton, it would have make a good punk movie?

Bad acting is what defines punk in every form.
