Top film not appreciated
This is a top film and any fan of the pythons work, especially the work of Michael Palin (eg Ripping Yarns) should watch and you will enjoy. But, do not watch it once, watch it a couple of times to really enjoy it.

Forgot to add - does anyone know when it goes on sale on DVD in the UK?
shareAmazon says 17th Feb 2003. Definitely worth ordering. Definitely worth repeated viewing.

its just how it goes on imdb. this is definately up there with the best comedy films of all time.
HELLO DENNIS!
I wouldn't say it's one of the top comedy films of all time, although I think it's really good and have wathced it several times- each time liking it more. It's the prefect almost-classic. If you enjoy Time Bandits and the Holy Grail you should definately make time for this diamond in the rough.
shareI bought this from HMV in London on special recently (in July) for about 6 quid. (I live in South Africa but was on holiday over there).
Have only seen it once but I would rate it about a 6. A few good moments and clever Pythonesque scenes and twists but I also thought that there was some stuff that just didn't quite work. Don't know whether they were trying to hard or they needed a John Cleese to make some of the scenes work.
After this movie Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam got together to co-write Time Bandits.
you can get in in hmv
shareI was stunned to see the 5.8 rating...then pleased to see so many positive comments in the comment section. (Mine should appear in a day or two.)
I have always considered this a Python film & have always ranked it second, right behind The Holy Grail. It may not be as side-splittingly hilarious, but it is so clever & historically detailed! I just saw it (twice) for the first time in several years & love it more than ever. I hope to be teaching college history in a year or so...if I'm ever teaching a class in the medieval period, I may find an excuse to show this film to my class!
I loved the hide & seek...one of the best cuts (from the king's flippant remark about hide & seek to the knight counting out loud) ever in Pythonland! The following scene of the armor-clad knights tiptoeing between the tents is also priceless, as is King Bruno the Questionable's name, Gilliam's cameo as the rock-collector and the first long-winded herald. The merchants "racing" their human-powered chariots was also great.
I thought the Jabberwock was well done, too. Jabberwocky is still my favorite all-time poem...I read it in 9th grade & was simply transfixed by it. I thought Gilliam did a great job of fleshing it out & that the creature even looked somewhat like the classic illustrations of Sir John Tennial (who illustrated Carroll's original books). For a fairly low-budget 1977 film, the special effects were really pretty dang good!
I'm glad I'm not the only poor soul who loves it!
The true beauty of this film is the gap between the generations.
Dennis with his industrial-age MBA attitude of inventory, production and efficiency versus his father's artisan-craftsman attitude toward being a cooper (a basket maker).
This dichotomy alone is worth the price of admission.
The juxtaposition of incongruous characters and ideas throughout the film are priceless.

Spot on. So much to appreciate here, love the atmosphere.
shareThe King, god, I loved the King. He steals every scene he's in.
shareThis is a great, very atmospheric movie with hilarious jokes. Just ordererd the DVD, omly saw it in the german translation by now, which I think is done very well. Yes it'S dark and might not get get you when you're young, but it contains so many EXTREMILY funny scenes tht don't wear off. that I can't understand the bad reviews even from Python-Fans though I don't automatically judge everything from the Pythonys as great. But this one is at least a 9. Numer 21 in my personal all time-ranking.
shareBut, do not watch it once, watch it a couple of times to really enjoy it.I hear ya. I had to watch it once, buy it on DVD and watch it a few more times before ranking it as a classic.
I bought it on DVD a couple of days ago, and didn't exactly expect to like it much, although I am a huge Gilliam fan... But to my pleasant surprise, I did! I thought it was really funny! :) It's still not a film I would recommend to anyone, but I'd definitely say it's worth a try. (Then again, I sometimes hesitate to recommend my all time favourites, too.)
Fun fact: The cover says "Jammerwocky" in big red letters. Nasty typo. :P
By the way, the Danish title translates to "Poor Dennis"! Why, oh why, would anyone want to rename Jabberwocky into that?
i rated 'Jabberwocky' a 5.
sharei just saw it.. and i only saw it once (so far) and i thought it was a bit slow.. very recognizable as pythonesque.. but only a shadow of the Holy Grail.. I rate it a 6 ..
But as everyone says: you have to see it twice multiple times.. so I may change my verdict later on...
you shouldn't really compare this to holy grail.
terry set out to make something more personal.
and for some reason i love this film, it has so much atmosphere and is more cerebral than holy grail.
ever seen a man bite his own head off?
I'm a very big fan of the Pythons and I personally think this movie is terrible. DON'T ATTACK ME, but it just didn't appeal to me as much as "Time Bandits."
shareI agree that this shouldn't be compared to Holy Grail. This is a different film, much darker, which relies on situation and feel more than on great comedy performances. I mean, the only real Python who acts much in this is Michael Palin, playing the straight man - this film would not have been made better by John Cleese's comedy gawking, cos it's not that kind of film.
Anyway, this is a monster movie! Classic cabin fever scenario in the city, people mistrusting each other and preying on each other, then main character ends up having to go out and fight the monster, everyone around him gets killed, and only he (the virtuous hero) survives. Makes more sense to compare this to The Thing than The Holy Grail.

I just rented it, and watched it for the first time. It begs many more viewings, as I know that there are subtle gems that I missed...that's often the case, for me, in Python related films. It is, now, on my "to buy" list.
