What did Patty say?

After Patty scores a touchdown, Linus tells Charlie Brown that it's time for the extra point. As usual, Lucy pulls the football away. Charlie Brown sails through the air, & lands on the kids' pileup. Then what did Patty say to Charlie Brown?

Look up Scott McGuire's Peanuts animation guide for the whole story...basically Patty is scolding CB for messing the play up. But after this special was first aired, viewers protested about her being too hard on Charlie Brown (since it was Lucy's fault). Hence the "offending" lines were obscured. (could they have done something less creepy than backwards masking, BTW?) I think some people didn't get the point of Charlie Brown: that he never gets any breaks, whether or not it's his fault. And amazingly the fact that Patty would be among the girls laughing at CB later on went unnoticed, apparently. Totally out of character. (can you tell that I am not a fan of this special? Between the above, Charlie Brown's voice sounding like he was dying, the jarring change from the Guaraldi style of music, and of course breaking comic strip canon)

Anyway, I wonder if anyone has the "unedited" version in their tape collections.

WHEW! I looked, & looked for it, & FINALLY found it! She said, "You really goofed up that play, Chuck!"

reply

She yelled at and chewed out CB for his "goofing up on that play".

CB should've cussed those witches out for that BS. Lucy knew she was wrong and was never called on it. If that would've been me, those chicks would've had their feelings hurt.

I could see him trying to tell them what really happened, and of course, Lucy denying it saying 'don't push your failures off on me, Charlie Brown.' Lucy I could see sticking to the idea of kicking CB while he's down, let alone getting in a couple 'mental knife jabs' for good measure.

Questions: 1) If someone has the tape, can you somehow reverse the, um, reversed speech and tell me if it is the original lines that were played backwards?

2) Does the original version of this special, with no editing, exist anywhere? (Not that I want it)

I agree on those who dislike the original line. It might have made more sense for Patty to say, "Good grief, Chuck--haven't you learned YET not to trust Lucille with that football?!"

They could've followed that up with some such conversation at the party:

Charlie Brown: I see Lucy hasn't showed up.
Linus: After the lecture Patty gave her, I'd be surprised if she showed her face for a week!
Patty (coming up behind them): Yeah, well, that doesn't let *you* off the hook, Chuck. After all the times she's pulled that football away, you should know better--especially with what we had at stake today! There's a line between "trusting" and "just plain dumb"!

That way, it still comes off as a scolding for poor ol'Charlie Brown, but it doesn't let Lucy off the hook.

I like your idea jschillig. Incidentally, you can hear the original lines on YouTube now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qba8C56qTVI

Peppermint Patty was the quarterback, she should have insisted somebody other than Lucy hold the ball! 🏈
