did they really___??

I remember seeing this when I was a kid and it scared me because of how real it looked. Were the actors really covered in ants ? I can't believe you'd convince anyone to do that for a movie. I guess stuntmen but not a real actor. Was this special fx or were they reall covered in ants ? I can't even imagine what that must have been like!! ick!!

Hello House_of_No,
I suppose the actors really had to "work" with real ants... for at the time when the movie was made, I don't think they had the "tricks & technical skills" to make it look like there were ants where there weren't any... What we see just doesn't look like an illusion created by a computer program - no, it looks as real as can be!
I think they had to pause for some days after each scene with ants crawling on the actor's bodies. Just think about the scene when Moosie Drier jumps into the pool to get rid of the ants. At that moment he MUST have received quite a lot of bites (okay, were someone to drown me, I'd panic and, if I could, I should bite him, too! Hehehe... ;-)
There's one scene in a movie with aggressive ants which I found much harder to watch; I think the movie is named "The Naked Jungle" (correct me if I'm wrong); when Leiningen defends his farm house against the ants, he had put some guards out in the jungle so they could warn him in time; the ants cross a river (or a ditch filled with water) on leaves and one of the guards who has fallen asleep gets swarmed by them. Starting from his feet, they crawl upwards within some seconds until his face is covered all over with ants. First you don't see much (as it is quite dark) but then you see his face with all these little beasts on it, and hear his screaming... of course he freaks out, very likely he gets killed - THIS was scary to watch!
But, back to "Ants" - I think Moosie Drier can be proud that he had the courage to do that scene. My compliments :-) ...and I hope he had no nightmares afterwards...
Kind regards

P.S. One terryfing scene in an "Ants movie" (Phase IV) shows us the dead body of a farmer, and it made me almost v*mit when they let one ant crawl out of a small hole in the inner side of his hand. Which meant the ants had already eaten him up fom inside... Of course this was not really a human corpse, and I guess they made most of the ant scenes in that movie by using computer simulations - BUT still, that scene and the whole movie ist so frightening it makes me shudder...
