Why not make Harry a girl?

I mean, since they changed the main character of George Bailey into Mary Bailey, why not make the brother (Harry) a sister instead? Not that it's important, just something it seems like they should have done.

To keep the subplot of him being a war hero in the 1940's. The same reason Mary didn't go deaf in one ear to have a reason for why she wasn't drafted.
