After he and Mary were married, he's a either a building contractor or a housing developer. The movie is not real specific on that point.

The movie kind of implies that the Bailey Building & Loan contracted directly with George Hatch Construction to build all the houses in Bailey Park, which I suspect might be illegal in some way.
They didn't get into the details of the whole deal, but in real life a B&L operated by the wife making house loans which funneled straight to the construction company operated by the husband would be considered a Sopranos-style arrangement.
