Whomever Decided to remake It's a Wonderful Life

SHOULD BE SHOT. Period. Some things just should NOT be remade...Gone With The Wind, The Wizard of OZ, It's a Wonderful Life. They were done right the first time and the stars of each of those WERE those characters. Just like when Joanne Whalley-Kilmer tried to be Scarlett...there is only ONE and that is Vivien Leigh. To have George Bailey change sexes...ridiculous. Marlo Thomas isn't that good an actress to even begin to compare with Jimmy Stewart on his very worst day. I remember watching this and wanting to slug her for even considering making the tv movie...and nearly 30 years later, I still do.

I'm with you, sister. Noone should mess with Jimmy. Marlo Thomas....kidding me? It's a Wonderful Life is a timeless masterpiece. Amen

i agree it is timeless but if you look at the time-frame it's a wonderful life really didn't become a classic until the 1980s when it was broadcast continuously on TV while it was in public domain. so remaking the film in the late 70's wasn't the sacrilege it would be today.

I agree. This version pales in comparison to the original. The Jimmy Stewart version was perhaps forgotten by the time this version aired in 1977. It probably the reason that the original was taken off the shelf and started to air again on TV.

Movies aren't sacred works of art. You can still believe IAWL to be a classic movie, which I do, and find this version amusing and a little charming.

Doing a straight remake WOULD have been pointless. The gender change at least made some of the situations interesting.

And they did it respectfully. They played it straight, not for farce like the SNL version with Belushi as Potter. That was funny as an 8-minute sketch, but it didn't need to be any longer.
