Islands in the Stream

One of George C. Scott's best performances. The entire cast is excellent, especially David Hemmings as Eddie. A must see that, somehow, doesn't get the recognition and praise it deserves.

It's very atmospheric. You get a real sense of time and place. The performances are top-notch across the board, of course. The visuals are beautiful, the ocean serene and forceful at the same time. Jerry Goldsmith's score is evocative, in-sync with the material. I even love that house the artist lives in (which we know if supposed to be Hemingway's beloved home in Cuba).

This movie is for thinking people. It's not heavy on plot, almost a series of revealing and effective vignettes that come together inevitably.

Yes, I agree that "Islands" deserves recognition and a wider audience. I'm just glad it's on DVD now.

The three boys playing his sons are also very good.

A George C. Scott masterpiece, I blubbered like a baby when he said goodby to his sons. ----- And the incredible thing is I just bought it on DVD at my local Las Vegas Fry's Electronics store for just $2.99 a couple of months ago. ----- ----- rusty

one of my absolute fave films from the 70's (or any era, really).

i usually don't care for films where kids play a prominent role, but the boys who play scott's sons do a great job at just being believable as the sons of a self-exiled artist. the fishing scene and the scene where the boys depart are pretty moving sequences.

claire bloom is unlike you usually see her (especially contrasted with her early films), too. but, you certainly can understand why even a libertine like the one hudson's supposed to be would still have feelings for her after years.

and, you can't discount the effect that the scenery and ocean has on the story's impact. a real treasure of a movie.
