Original Soundtrack now available!

5000 copies are available. This CD includes the original recording of the music. Earlier releases only included a re-recording made by Goldsmith in 1986.

I acquired this CD a few years ago. It is one of the finest film scores ever written, and is a must-have.

There, daddy, do I get a gold star?

Goldsmith wasn't very happy with the overall sound quality and the orchestras playing the music in the first place. I felt exactly the same when I watched the film a few hours ago. Maybe I'm spoiled by th re-recording...I don't know.
But the grace of the melody in "Hudson's Theme" for instance which comes from the french horn has a much warmer feeling to it in the re-recording.

This score is one of the very best, it's so beautiful. It perfectly captures the essence of the main character, Hudson, and his feelings. Besides that it's also able to capture the feel of the ocean, by which Hudson is surrounded. It's a masterfull score and one of Goldsmith's most memorable efforts.

About the difference between the original recording and the re-recording I don't know too much though. What I do know is that I loved the score within the film and that I loved the re-recording CD. I haven't listened to the original score on album, nor in relation to the re-recording, so I can't judge if I share Jerry Goldsmith's opinion about the original. Tomorrow the original soundtrack album will arrive though and I'll be enjoying that one throughout the day I think. I love this score!

You said, "I love you," I said, "Wait"
I was going to say, "Take me," you said, "Go away"

This is one of my favorite scores by Jerry Goldsmith. It's so melodic, beautiful, and serene. It should have been nominated for an oscar.

Thanks for your commments everyone. I have the re-recorded CD done in 1986, and it is excellent. Beautifully played, not a flaw in it. The difference between it and the orignal score CD is probably the "Eddie's Death" cue, I see the timing is a bit longer and probably included the short high pitched "Cuban Coast Guard Chase" musical cue. I asked Douglas Fake at Intrada Records years ago about that. He said it was originally included in the re-recording session, but Jerry Goldsmith asked him in person to delete it, because he felt it broke the rhythmn of the final passages.
By asking that, he was essentially agreeing with me and others, who feel that the ending could have been much better. The Cuban Coast Guard chase was a very poor way to end it. They should have followed Hemingway's ending. Oh well...what's done is done. (RIP Jerry Goldsmith - died July 21st, 2004).
