a masterpiece

A film like this makes me wonder if I ever should have given so many other movies a ten. Iphigenia is in a class by itself... possibly the greatest film I've ever seen.

I hated it. Terrible camera work, over-the-top dialog. Overrated.

over the top dialog? Are you aware that it is based on an ancient greek tragedy?

While I don't think it is even close to being one of the greatest films I've ever seen, I thought it was very striking, memorable and I absolutely loved it!!

I recall in the late '70s that this kept playing in various art-house theaters in San Francisco (where I had just moved from a small town) and I had meant to go see it then. Somehow, other things kept getting in the way and I never got around to it. I don't recall seeing it on TV after that, so it sort of drifted out of my mind after some time.

Just recently I saw it listed on Netflix (and Instant Viewing, at that), so I jumped at the chance of finally seeing it and what a joy that was. The print was in almost pristine condition, brilliant colors, etc. Watching it on my 50 inch HD TV made me feel as if I were in a theater watching it. The film did not seem dated in any way, with Irene Papas absolutely brilliant, as always. I had watched her in "Electra" just a few days earlier (which was a bit more "stagey" but still good, nevertheless) so it was good seeing two different films that were inter-connected.

You've done some bad things, sweetie.

I know how you feel, slipcat. I've never heard of this movie until I recently saw it on Netflix's Instant Queue.

I almost didn't stick with it. The movie spends a LOT of early real estate establishing characters and situations, and the acting style isn't as realistic as I'm used to. I'm glad I did, tho. By the time Irene Papas and retinue arrive at Aggie's war camp I was involved, and Tatiana Papamoschou broke my heart. The scene were she prepares for the sacrifice was very moving.

I gave it 5 stars on Netflix.

I've seen a million movies - or so it seems - and out of all those maybe 3 or 4 got a 10, if that. This one got one too! It was awesome.

Grade: A.

That last shot, the look on Clytemnestra's face... sublime. I adore Irene Papas, she's an incredible actor.

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering,fearing...doubting.

Agreed wholeheartedly! And I always liked that we get to see the ships through her eyes and her hair that has been blowing in her face is, accurately, also blowing on the camera.
