Filming location(s)?

Anyone knoiw where this movie was filmed?

reply

I don't know where it was filmed, but the author (patient) had actually stayed at a private hospital called Chestnut Lodge in Rockville, Maryland -- it's now defunct.

Chestnut Lodge was also the setting for LILITH which starred Warren Beatty, Jean Seberg, Peter Fonda, Gene Hackman and Rene Auberjonois. The author based the novel on his own experiences, and the hospital refused to cooperate with the movie.
Almost anything you can recognize about downtown Rockville was subsequently torn down. A former aide at the hospitcal Bill Thomas(?) told me he was hired as a technical advisor on the movie and teach Beatty the duties and responsibilities but that Beatty ignored him. For instance, you don't walk arm in arm down Montgomery Avenue with one of your patients.

The hospital was taken over by an HMO which ran it into the ground, and the patients were apparently put out on the street. It has since been torn down.

God bless America.

There was a lot of discussion about that in the group therapy sessions several years ago. The HNO's and anybody else involved in dumping patients on the streets did them no favor.
I've never been in a mental hospital, but I used to live in an informal halfway house for people who'd been in Chestnut Lodge and other local hospitals. CL was expensive 40 odd years ago.
Did you know it also inspired the book and movie I NEVER PROMISED YOU A ROSE GARDEN?

See you at the movies.

It was not torn down. It was bought by a company in 2008 that was going to turn it into upscale condos while maintaining the building's historical figure. Unfortunately, last month, there was a fire that gutted the building. The cause is still unknown but arson is suspected since it was unoccupied and had no electricity running through it.

By the way, I've lived in Rockville my entire life.

reply

I stand corrected since I lived in Rockville from 61-4. My fanher and his second family were among the first families in Twinbrook. I stll remember seeing Jack Kelly of MAVERICK in person. I read an interview with him several years ago, and he said originally he and James Garner were to alternate on the show with occasional joint appearances. He felt WB's decision to concentrate on Garner hurt his career.

reply

It was filmed at the VA hospital in Brentwood, and the fantasy sequences were filmed in Palm Desert.
