He started his acting career in Australia, on an Australian TV show, the same year this movie was filmed (either in America or Canada). What would he be doing in this movie? At 20, he's going to hop over to the States and appear as an extra in this film?

Must have been a boo-boo, but Mel Gibson isn't listed now.

You are correct, it is not Mel but Dennis Quaid and is clearly credited as the baseball player.
