Early in the scene after the death at the church there's a scene in which a photo of a corpse is being lowered. Was that Karen's photo?

I think that was the implication, but it IS hard to tell. It would certainly make more sense than just a random corpse-photo!

Yes, it was a photo of Karen's burned corpse.

but why would anyone use that picture other than the police? and why would anyone put it in the coffin?

....It wasn't in the coffin. It was at the police station.
