Jim's wife?

I didn't watch this movie very carefully, but what happened to the fact that Jim got married at the end of the Love Bug? What explanation is given for the absence of his wife and the fact that he has a new love interest?

I thought Don Knotts just played his wife and turned out to be a really ugly woman.

I know. I would have liked to see Carole (Jim's love interest, eventual wife) in the movie.

Possible expanation:

After 2 years of a happy marriage, there was an unfortunate accident in San Fran. on lombard street. Jim, being single again vows never to let himself fall into a relationship again and finds Wheely (marriage would be the last thing on ure mind if u saw don knotts everyday). He goes away for a while and leaves Herbie behind, blaming herbie for the accident. Tennessee doesnt like the fact that Jim has found Wheely so he goes off to live with the monks again. When Jim and Wheely come back, he is a changed man and wants to race with Herbie again. Being older, he needs to prove himself and fuel his ego. In the process he finds Diane and Herbie finds Gizelle. It was love again for Jim. For Herbie, having just gone through puberty, he was ready to settle down with an automobile.

I'm watching this now and again as before, I don't see that the woman--Diane is his love interest at all. They seem more on friendly terms, but no romance. It's the cars that get all the romance here.

Simple explanation: Retcon

Retroactive continuity is the deliberate changing of previously established facts in a work of serial fiction. The change is informally referred to as a "retcon," and producing a retcon is called "retconning". - from Wikipedia

Here's my take on it. Carole and Jim had a painful divorce after a short while, and Jim, being devastated by this, felt he needed to spend some time away the familiar things that reminded him of her (events from "The Love Bug"). He goes to Europe and attempted to revive his racing career, leaving Herbie and Tennessee behind and upset. Shortly after that, Tennessee gets a letter from one the Tibeten Monks he studied with saying that the guru was sick and needed him to be there. Tennessee, knowing that he obviously can't take Herbie with him, calls his aunt (Mrs. Steinmetz) to make sure Herbie is kept in good hands and to watch the firehouse. Then all the "Rides Again" stuff happens, and Jim eventually returns to the States, connects with a friend Wheely Applegate, and they reclaim Herbie from Mrs. Steinmetz (by this time Willoughby and Nicole are off happily married). Tennessee, however, doesn't come back for some reason and continues to stay in Tibet (and Mrs. Steinmetz stays in the firehouse). Jim and Wheely decide that Herbie deserves a big comeback, enter in the Monte Carlo Grand Prix in France, travel there, sees Diane and the Lancia, and you know the rest!
