12 years since last victory?

How come it's being mentioned that Herbie last won a race 12 years ago when he won a race in the Love Bug, which was shot in 1968 and Monte Carlo in 1977. Maybe he also won a race in Herbie Rides Again(1974), but I haven't seen that one yet. If he did win a race in that one, then it makes even less sense.

I never understood that either as a life long Herbie fan, I guess the new writer didn't do his homework.
And Herbie did't win a race in the second movie, it was a chicken contest.

First I tought Jim mentions his last victory in Europa with foreign race cars like grandma Steinmetz mentions in Herbie rides again but when he read at the newspaper I tought dammed bad writer

reply

Don't write "Europa", "tought" and "dammed" and then accuse other people of being bad writers!

i tought..i tought, i tought a bad writer....i did, i did, i did!

Now that's funny, well done top!

Well I guess the writers wanted it to be 12 years later after the events of "The Love Bug." Not sure why they said 12, it should be 9.
And... Herbie Rides Again didn't have a race. It was more of a side story where Jim goes off to europe to race and Herbie stays behind in Steinmitz house.

Specific dates, including what year it is, are never mentioned in the dialogue. You have to remember that just because a film is made in 1968, or 1978, or whenever, that does not mean that it is set in that same year. If Jim says it was 12 years, then in this particular film's world, whenever exactly the story is set, it's been 12 years (well, unless the story itself gives some reason to believe that he's wrong, which this one does not).
