i dont think that she raped him. he said at the end that it didnt change anything and that it wasnt bad. i think it just shows the viewer that he is totally homosexual and not straight at all so he is a little shocked at this idea!! i think it is really right. if he enjoyed it it would be too 'fairy tale'. how many women today want to be the woman that 'turns' gay guys to the straight and narrow?!!!

"how many women today want to be the woman that 'turns' gay guys to the straight and narrow?!!!"

Probably not nearly as many men who think that they can 'convert' lesbians to heterosexuality if they'd only just give them the chance.

She did not rape him. He kind of allowed her to take advantage of him if I may say so. He realized she needed that, so he grabbed her breast...

reply

I agree. Well observed.

I believe it was a case of misunderstanding.....not a rape at all...

Nobody cares if you are crazy or not.Just say what you want to say.

I agree 100%.

I don't think anyone should forcibly convert another to a different sexuality. However, I know a lesbian couple in which one woman has cheated on her partner with men. It's their problem but it happens.

reply

I don't think she raped him. Antonietta clearly needed that kind of human connection with another person after the speech she gives about not loving her husband anymore, and Gabriele just lets her take control of his body.

This world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel.

I found it a bit disturbing, and tbh it was a bit nauseating and contrived that they even had to have sex to express their special connection. Why not just be friends?

reply

Pushy? yes. Even aggressive, but it wasn't rape. I didn't hear him say 'no' or 'stop.' He didn't push her away. But watching his facial expressions we can see so much. He is defeated, depressed, and for whatever reason, he decided to accept her advances. I didn't find it contrived and it's not really clear what either characters' personal motivations were in the act. It is a cinematic mirror held up to the viewer - what we see is our own reaction to the characters' actions.

Maybe she just wanted tenderness. Maybe for once, she wanted to feel what sex was like when she initiated it, when she was in control. Maybe he was just curious enough to be willing to have the experience. Many a homosexual man has tried it but the prior discussions have ignored the possibility that, like many people, he might have been, at least a little bit, bisexual. But my belief is he knew where he was going. The point was that he didn't conform to the fascist proscription of masculinity. Maybe he wanted to be certain he could never be a husband and father. Or maybe he just wanted to accept the last bit of free tenderness he would know, no matter how unnatural it felt to him.

And no, she wasn't trying to convert him. For a few moments, she was simply free - a liberated woman some decades prior to that concept gaining widespread acceptance in the West. I'm guessing this would have resonated with feminists when the film was first released.

For Gabriele, this was probably the last intimate human contact he would ever have, and he knew it. Antonietta is starved for real affection from a man. So they meet each other's needs for a short time. Also, they have grown to care for each other during this one day ("special" in so many ways, as it turns out). When Gabriele says 'this changes nothing' he means not just his sexual orientation, but his general outlook on life....we soon learn he will be taken away (probably to Sardinia to a labor camp). Antonietta knows little or nothing of that, but she has connected to another human in a way she may never have done before. So for both of them this has been an extraordinary day, but one that can never be repeated, they both know for their own reasons. The magnificent performances make this film totally believable and moving. A masterpiece, imho.
