where gabriele is taked

at the end of the film two men scort gabriele away ,,, anyone guess where?
a concentation camp ?

reply

into "confino," probably in Sardegna or rural southern Italy. Basically, they took "subversives," anti-fascists, homosexuals, and other political challengers of fascism and sent them into forced exile in the more rural parts of Italy where they were forbidden contact with the outside world. concentration camps came years later and were mainly a function of the nazis in Italy by then.

reply

I think Sardegna, because when Gabriele is packing he asks the men who come to pick him up (police?) when the boat leaves.

Very likely he was taken to the Sardinian city of Carbonia, where homosexuals were rounded up by the Fascist regime and the more fit of them were forced to work in the local coal mines, on the wrong assumption that having them engage in "manly" work will somehow "fix" their issues...

Interesting. Gabriele mentions a friend who was also sent to Sardinia; so he was also likely a homosexual? I assumed that was the case, but the movie was never clear on that. That's why I love it - it's so subtle.

This world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel.

reply

Of course he was talking about another friend who has homosexual.
Did you need a flashback of the other guy having sex??

reply

In facist Italy, gay mem were sent into exile, mostly and most famoisly tomthemisland of San Domino in the Tremiti islands in the Adriatic Sea. However, some others were sent to other islands as well, and Gabriele was sent to Sardinia. Later theymwere all brought back to the mainland, and put under house arrest in their homes.

It's time for a backlash against digital photography, motion pictures, music, sfx
