THIS IS THE WORST MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!

I am not of one those idiots who says "WORST MOVIE EVER" to every movie they see.

Actually I normally love all movies I see. Expect movies like "Garfield: The Movie", "Home On The Range", "Halloween", "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (1974) and others.

Now I have thought of all the movies I hate and "The Gauntlet" is absolutely the worst movie I have ever seen. I mean it.

I actually cried after watching it because I realized how much time I had wasted.

Does anyone agree?

I didn't particularly like it, but the WORST film... no way. Maybe stupid, but definitely not the worst. You must live a sheltered life from BAD films.

I take it you watched the whole lot? If it was that BAD wouldn't you just stop watching it?

reply

No! What if - like "Schindler's List" - it turned out to be good in the end?

The Gauntlet is actually a highly thoughtful character study and a shockingly subversive and perceptive allegory about the Vietnam War, American society, and masculinity. It might just seem stupid because of the purposefully hyperbolic action sequences.

You might need a sense of irony to really appreciate this film, though.

I saw the Gauntlet about 15 years ago and I can't remember seeing a more fantastic, ridiculous and excellent ending in a movie since! And the police shooting the house down with guns (if i remember correctly) - brilliant! These are images that'll stick in my head 'til I die.

"God Makes House Calls" (a sign that the camera picks up during the assault)

I think this movie portrays cops as mindless idiot robots who will shoot at anything or anyone they are ordered to without question. If I was a cop, I'd be embarrassed after seeing this movie...

What a tool.

lmaoroflmyfao. that is the best reply i have ever seen on imdb. respect.

Just looking within the Eastwood canon alone, you're saying THE GAUNTLET is worse than FIREFOX and THE ROOKIE and PINK CADILLAC?!? I think not.

Personally, I think THE GAUNTLET is a fun, rough-and-ready yarn in the classic B-Movie mould that Clint sometimes liked to idulge in back before everybody loved and honored him as a grand old man of the movie biz.

Interestingly, you can almost view THE GAUNTLET as Clint being a bit ahead of his time -- anticipating the high concept big-budget action pics of the 80s.

Another interesting thing to note -- whenever he'd just done a Dirty Harry sequel, he always seemed to jump into a pic that played against that persona (another example being TIGHTROPE coming straight after SUDDEN IMPACT).

Yeah, true. Likewise, The Gauntlet (Clint Eastwood, 1977) directly followed The Enforcer (James Fargo, 1976).

Also, as for the ending's lack of "realism," consider the ending of North by Northwest (Alfred Hitchcock, 1959), where Cary Grant and Eve Marie-Saint scramble about on the heads of Mount Rushmore. The Gauntlet, while much harder and harsher in tone, uses hyperbolic spectacle in a similar way, for purposes of parody and ironic social commentary.

Agreed. Coming in the late 1970s, The Gauntlet does represent a bit of a turning point between the seventies action film and the eighties action movie. Also, The Gauntlet uses that action in ironic and socially subversive ways, to make a point about police brutality and corruption, violently excessive overkill, self-righteous authoritarianism, and blind conformity.

Yeah, the film does feature a certain noir quality with its emphasis on institutional conspiracy, its "gullible Joe" hero, its equal male-female partnership, and its flight-by-road. Of course, these elements are posited in a modern action film, but there is a certain screwball/noir lineage there.

I'm not usually an action movie kind of gal, but I loved it (for what it was). Especially since there's so little actual _blood_.

The ending (actually the whole movie) prefigured Peter Weir's _Witness_. The ending was almost identical, except the bad-cop leader got shot instead of handcuffed. The only reason the two of them weren't shot at the end, seemed to be that then, there would be too many "witnesses" who saw them shoot an unarmed duo. Like at the end of _Witness_, where Harrison Ford starts shouting at the bad police captain, "You gonna shoot me? You gonna shoot HIM too?" ("HIM" being the little boy), while all the Amish are watching.

Plus, Sondra Locke rocked. She played that part to perfection!

Miami Vice is pretty much the worst movie I've seen from recent memory, when I was a kid I went to the cinema and watched "The Stupids", that was pretty diabolical too. I was only 8 at the time, but even I thought it was bad.

Except the James Bond films had been doing it for over a decade prior to this crap.

You hated Halloween and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre huh? This just proves to me that your just another imbecile whose comments should just be ignored

reply

Why?

You don't have a life.

reply

No - get a life and start watching some movies - there are a hell of a lot worse!

reply

Not the worst ever, but one of the worst Clint Eastwood movie. I didn't like this because I do like Eastwood and thought this movie was a travesty.

reply

I find it to be very entertaining. It has strong lead performances, a lot of interesting supporting characters, fun (if improbable) action sequences, with Eastwood's trademark deadpan humor thrown in for good measure. Oh, and it doesn't hurt that every time I see this film, I want to jump through the screen and get busy with Sondra Locke!

"Nag! Nag! Nag!"

reply

I've seen movies worse than this, thats for sure. To the original poster, dude, you either rented to walked into see Garfield: The Movie, lol. OMG, scary thought.

I remember watching this film back in '77 when i was a 12 year old (dumb ass Sunday fathers.)

But here's what I got out of the film back then:

1) shooting a house full of holes looks fun but makes no sense.
2) how does a chick get loose from being tied up with heavy gauge wire.
3) Sondra Locke was kind of a waste of a good topless scene.
4) "pig iron" never heard anyone mention those two words together since, except for me.
5) helicopter pilots are all idiots.
6) harley's smoke like hell and suck on dirt.
7) Sondra Locke kills a good topless scene.
8) shooting a bus full of holes looks fun and buses have bullet proof tires, except when there so full of lead. that's when they just pop.
9) getting shot in the leg and shoulder must not hurt that much.

Can a movie be so bad and yet be so memorable? I ask you!

I got to watch part of this movie being filmed in Phoenix. When it came out I went to see if with most of Phoenix, there were lines waiting for the showings. I thought it was pretty bad and remember thinking Clint Eastwood must have only done it for the money. Crummy plot and Sondra Locke's "acting" even got a few laughs at scenes that weren't suppose to be funny. Worst movie ever? No, pretty bad movie? Yes, and I'm a fan of Clint Eastwood.
