Opening and closing song ?

"How time flies, we were once ahead of the game..." Very catchy. Wondering who wrote it or sang the lyrics. Was this original music written for this movie? The only music credits I found online are for Music Composers Gene Page, Ernest Gold and Lamont Dozier. One site names "The Movies" for songwriting. Is the artist named in the closing credits? Thanks for any interest and assistance.

It's "Ahead of the Game" by The Movies.

"Because you're mine, I walk the line"

I really liked this song, and it should have been nominated for an award somewhere.

Anyone know if it's available anywhere? I'd like to add it to my collection.

When I heard it today, my son and I both said "Nilsson"? The music and vocals sounded like Harry Nilsson to us.

I agree with bobcows - this really sounds like Harry Nilsson. The voice sounds like him, and so does the arrangment. However, the All Music Guide does not list this song (if "Ahead of the Game" is actually the correct title???) as one he recorded.

Interestingly, they show the group listed as "Movies" having recorded just one album, and "Ahead of the Game" is NOT one of the titles. So, there is a bit of a mystery here. Other groups with the supposed correct name, "The Movies" are from much later than the 70's, when this movie was made and released.

Having said all that, my money is on Nilsson - it sure sounds like his voice, and the kind of song and arrangement he would put together.

It totally sounds like Nilsson, whose music would have been perfect for this film. The band the Movies credited in this film were definitely not the British band that surfaced in the late '70s. Maybe they were just one of those studio assemblages that tried to sound like an established artist?

As another poster mentioned, it also sounds a bit like Gilbert O'Sullivan, but my money's still on Harry Nilsson.

i don't know a lot about mr nilsson, but i think it sounds a lot like gilbert o'sullivan

That Gilbert O'Sullivan/Nillson style was all over the place in the 70s - commercials, movies, AM radio. It makes me cringe.

I'm with a lot of people here. I always thought it was Nilsson. He did the theme for the TV show, Courtship of Eddie's Father.... People Let Me Tell You Bout My Best Freind.....etc.....
It sounds like that.

"Fasten your seat belts!
It's going to be a bumpy night!"

The band was definitely The Movies. Sure, it sounds like Harry Nilsson. It also sounds like Badfinger, who sounded like The Beatles. It was a successful pop music formula of the times. Those of you who like this kind of tune should listen to "Senses Working Overtime" by XTC. This is the best of all Beatles imitation songs in my opinion. That and the XTC psychedelic incarnation known as Dukes of the Stratosphear, whose mock-psychedelia album 25 O'Clock actually bests everything from the 60s.

Listen. And this is definitive, okay? The title song WAS sung by the band The Movies. Harry Nilsson had absolutely nothing to do eith it. Of course, he was probably an influence on the band, due to their sound, no doubt. BUT...there are TWO different bands called The Movies. I know this because I have their LP with the original song. The only difference in the LP version, and the one in the movie is that the real song didn't have the opening part with the children singsonging, and the two claps during the song was a bass drum, not clapping, on the original song. So...it IS on an LP by The Movies. But if you're looking for it, watch out. There're two bands with the same name. AND it's never been out on CD anytime, anywhere. YET.
