New or Old

Just wanted to know which version you thought was better? The new one with Jim Carrey or this older version?

What are you talking aboot?" - Gotta love Canada! :-)

reply

the one with jim carrey

Remakes are 99% garbage. This one is no exception. Jim Carrey hasn't even the same sensitivity that George Segal has and Tea Leone can never compare to Jane Fonda. Why bother remaking a movie - just the bucks. Not worth the price of celluloid.

"Nobody's perfect."

One case where the remake's far, far better: The Thomas Crown Affair.

As for these two, I didn't like either much. Though I will say, in both the lead actress is far better than the actor.

reply

Totally disagree! The remake was very good, but nothing like Dunaway and MCQUEEN! I saw the remake of TTCA in theaters and have only seen the original TTCA on tv in standard version and it still beats the remake. Sorry, you can't beat that original's chemistry and subtlety... McQueen ruled the screen when it came to cool... and THIS original film was bi far better than the remake, too - not even close.

George Segal and Jim Carrey are both brilliant. I don't see how or why you would even begin to compare them to their leading ladies. They're all very good. Although the screenplays are a bit lacking.

"Fun with Dick and Jane" was a hell of a Comedy. And I´m german. You know, what they say about Germans an humour... . The Carrey-Thing, was, well "The Carrey-Thing". Not more, not less.

Remakes are 99% garbage

All of you self-proclaimed movie buffs that think like this have this mindset before seeing any remake, so of course it is destined to fail (in your eyes) before you even see it. Fact is that if these remakes weren't popular with the majority then Hollywood would stop making them. A bunch of nerds sitting around bitching about them doesn't come into any decision-making process of producers because it is irrelevant.
Remakes have been around for a long time, it ain't something new because Hollywood is out of ideas. And there isn't much difference between adapting a novel or a comic book into a movie from remaking an old film or TV series besides the obvious.

PS. The remake was better, both leads played there parts very well. Not Carrey's best work but I think that was mainly due to the role rather than his performance.

Opinions are like a$$holes, everybody has one - Dirty Harry.
But some are really $hitty - davywap.

Oh no, the Jim Carrey version really really sucks.
Avoid at all cost or you will be wasting times of your live that could be put to better use.

reply

...the one with George Segal.

Oh Lord, you gave them eyes but they cannot see...

JIM AND TEA!

reply

yup ure right jim and tea its a fab movie .

reply

I've seen both, and I prefer Jim and Téa's "version"... although I think remakes suck, I feel more identified with Jim's situation, is more palpable and contemporary... besides, Jim Carrey is THE KING, and Téa is more lovely and less vulgar than Jane Fonda (was the peeing + wiping scene so necessary?)... and don't forget Alec Baldwin!

reply

I prefer the original & best, the new 'remake' doesnt come close to being funny as this classic, even my eleven year old nephew thought the 'remake' was crap,
he loved the original,
it just goes to show that hollywood has ran out of ideas,

reply

The older version for sure!
I don't know why they constantly spent so much money on re-making movies.
Of course movie production is an evolving process, but it's the old ones that shaped our minds; and they are still influencing our society today.
BTW, I love Jane Fonda's performance. She is a woman of legend!
If you want to know more about her, I recommend you to read the autobiography named "My Life So Far" which was published in 2005.
See the photo in this website? Jane with Eve Ensler? A definitely supporter for V-Days; and also an anti-war backer with indepentdence, beauty, freedom and passion.

reply

i loved them both, the new one is updated for our times, other than that its the same story aint it!

the new one was funnier , much much more, the mexico escape was hilarious!

reply

When I watched the new version with Carey and Leoni I thought it wasn't as good... my memory had failed however, as I rewatched the old version with Fonda, whom I am a big fan and Segal (not a fan).... and honestly the newer was better. Normally I vote for the older versions but in this case, the newer version was much better.

reply

I have not watched the original so...but I just wanted to say that remakes should be used for the re-telling of a good story turned into a bad movie. All those movies out there that could have been an awesome story but bad directing, bad casting, etc, etc, have ruined the story. These movies shoud be given a second go as a remake. There was nothing more to flesh out I would bet with this film except the recycling of a comedy that made par.

George and Jane!!

they both just plain sucked.

One remake that comes to mind is "Ocean's Eleven". I saw the original Frank Sinatra "rat-pack" version, after seeing the George Clooney remake, and I have to admit the original, while having a certain 1960's charm, was not that entertaining.

I liked Jim Carrey better than George Segal, and Jane Fonda better than Tea Leoni. Well, can't win them all, can we, lol?

reply

Anyone who REALLY has even the slightest taste and sensibility about talent and movies would see - without question - that the George Segal/Jane Fonda version runs circles around the newer fiasco. I loved the original when I first saw it many moons ago and finally last night got around to watching the new version. Jim Carrey most DEFINITELY should stick to the stupid, slapstick schtick he perfected as Ace Ventura - no one can touch him there, when he's got all cylinders firing. Tea Leoni: I wonder just WHO and how many she had to sleep with to get her foot in the door to acting, because she SURE has NO talent or believability as an actress (see Deep Impact, Jurassic Park 3, etc., where her performances were more wooden than trees). Must have impressed SOMEONE along the way I guess.

This movie stunk. No kinder way to put it.

reply

I haven't seen the old one so I can't give a very valid answer, however, I really enjoyed the newer one and I don't see how the older one could be better. Esp. because a lot of the reason that I like it is because it's so modern, fun and slick. But anyways Jim Carrey is a lot of fun and he's Canadian!! and don't you forget it!

Oh yeah and as for other remakes that are better than their orginal--Ocean's Eleven
