Underrated classic.........

If this film had been made in Italy in 1948 it would be classed as a masterpiece of neo-realism. It wasn't, and yet it still is. Non-actors, real locations and great work within a low budget give this piece of cinema verite power, humour and honesty. I rate it in the top Aussie films of all time along with Wake in Fright, Don's Party, Walkabout & Sunday Too Far Away.

Am I wrong????

Nope, I'm in full agreement :)!

It's great because it's a one-of-a-kind insight into the time and culture - a perhaps under-appreciated period in our Nation's history...It's a kind of semi-documentary in a way...Of course the story is all over the place but it's kind of entertaining in parts.

I don't know about a masterpiece, but it's an Aussie classic. I just watched it again today. I first watched it about 20 years ago because I used to work with Eva who played Anne (she said she was embarrassed and asked me not to watch it).

So I started watching it with my b/f, who I thought would like it because he's a car nut. He said it was the most boring movie he had ever seen. I liked it, although the acting and script were terrible, because it was a flashback to my teenage years.

I preferred Puberty Blues.

I know it seems like it drifts but I wonder if that isn't part of the appeal. The characters are going nowhere and the film like them seems to do the same. There is an unavoidable high school film class feel about the whole production but it has a feel for the period and for the area.I forced my kids to watch it and they have banned me from picking a movie ever again. But i liked it

it's more of a 'mock-umentary' (fake documentary) of australian life in the 1970s.

remember this was filmed in Bankstown, its in the middle of a sea of houses, its not near the beach, its not near the country, its a pretty crappy place to live and this film reflects that. I know most of my friends that grew up around there have moved elsewhere.

Bankstown/Greenacre was a great place to grow up in this era. Some of this was filmed a half block to a k or two away from our family house. In fact one of my school buddies got paid 20 bucks to drive past on his skateboard down Rawson Rd as the FJ pulled out of Pandora St down to Waterloo Rd. This was a great time period piece. Bought back the Bankstown area I remember.
