Would this have made the film better?

Say the story introduced Howard MacNeil as an onscreen character and the film revolved him trying to reconnect with his daughter and whatever else story thread clichés might go along with it but also adding the conflict of the unnamed demon of the first movie trying to get revenge on her. The movie would end with Howard successfully protecting Regan and some priest character, ex. Father Dyer, banishing the demon in some fashion.

Would this have made the film more interesting and a whole lot better?

Better dialogue and plot. I actually like the surreal and mystical feel to the movie, and overall I think the movie had an interesting concept, just horribly carried out.
