Be Honest: Who Likes This Better Than the Original?

Let's not get nasty here.

I genuinely prefer this film to the original, which has never done anything for me. I watch this movie all the time. The music is great, the cinematography, the whole atmosphere, the crazy ambiance. I think this is an extremely misunderstood masterpiece.

I would not call this a "masterpiece", but it is a much better movie than the horror movies of these days. Pretty decent to me. I think the original is better, but just like you do, I use to rewatch this too. The atmosphere, the bizarre music and Burton worths the watch!

The cinematography is interesting, I'll give you that. But I think all the other characteristics of this movie are abhorrent, regardless of how it compares to the original "Exorcist". Even Ennio Morricone's score is annoying, "Regan's Theme" notwithstanding. All in all, Dr. Goodhead, I'd say that this sequel appeared with the tedious inevitability of an unloved season.

I didn't think there were any seasons in space.

Well, I wouldn't say "better" but certainly on the same level of the original. I love them both for totally different reasons. "Exorcist II" is quite possibly the most underrated film ever made.

reply

i did. but not by much.

reply

Yes, I liked this film much more than the original which I think is an extremely overrated, "shock film".

The sequel is a much more thoughtful and ambitious film.

Boorman turned down directing the original film because he thought it was essentially about "torturing a child". His sequel almost seems to be aiming at making up for the over the top abuses of the first film.

According to wikipedia Martin Scorcese did...

I'll be honest and say I like the third one more than the original.

I'll be honest and say that I think the third one is the worst of the series, full of ridiculous retconning ("He was a saint, my best friend; I loved him!" says Kinderman after meeting Karris ONCE in the original film) and stupidly long scenes that are meaningless and boring.

An obvious continuity error the film did not need. Also, I take it you don't like psychological horror that makes you think. One of the reasons the film is so underrated.

I like psychological horror that makes you think if it's done well. "Silence of the Lambs" came a year after "Exorcist III" and is far and away the better film and a masterpiece. I also love "Maniac" and "The Shining." But when that kind of horror is done badly, it's even worse than, say, a badly made slasher film, which can at least morph into something fun and enjoyable.

"Mr. Bond, you defy all my attempts to plan an amusing death for you."

reply

Low budget and studio interference must have prevented that for EXORCIST 3.

Absolutely. That ending is utter garbage. I am way more hurt by a movie that is clearly supposed to be deep and meaningful and intelligent that has been mutilated somewhere in the process.

I only recently watched Exorcist III for the first time. I thought it was a very good film and I liked it more than the original. But the other person who likes Exorcist II and hates Exorcist III, well, I find it hard to take them seriously. Exorcist II is ridiculous. There is a reason that it is generally considered to be one of the worst films ever made. But hey, you ALWAYS have that one person who likes crap. Hell, even Halle Berry's Catwoman had a fan! 

I am not a fan. I just happen to enjoy movies. Fans are embarrassing.

I liked this much better than the original. It is one of my favorite movies of all time. I love the acting, the music, the effects, the story, everything about it. I also like the idea of Pazuzu possessing Regan because she was a healer with a gift that brought goodness to the world, and Pazuzu wanted to destroy the goodness. That was a very creative idea. I like how the movie is very dreamlike. It seems more like a surreal dream rather than a movie and I like that about it. It is unlike any movie I have ever seen and that's why it's one of my favorites.

I do. Count me in. I got a LOT more out of it.

While I did find the film's logic hard to follow, but I will admit that in my own way I enjoyed it more than the first film. Wish that Ellen Burstyn would have returned but I know that she flat out refused to return.

I'm in complete agreement, Mark. It's a beautiful movie, and a highly eligible candidate for Most Underrated Movie in Hollywood history.
It's surrealist aura reminds me of the work of Georges Franju in many ways. Top notch production. The script is a little overly silly of course, and Linda Blair is always a liability in my mind. I love this movie, though. It's an underground classic that holds up very well today in a strange way, whereas the original is an overblown moldy chunk of cheese long past its sell-by date.
