Yeah. Blatty would have had to be crazy to give the slightest nod to the Boorman film. Fortunately, he based the ExIII screenplay on his own novel, Legion, which of course had nothing to do with Heretic.
Ha, but it doesn't ignore this film. Have you forgotten the opening sequence of the locusts swarming the church? That is a direct nod to this film, making at least some small connection.
Hope you're just clowning around. There are no locusts, swarming or not, in Exorcist III. What is shown is a bunch of leaves that blow into the church from the outside. No bugs.
Um, then you've either obviously never seen the movie or not paying attention when you did see it, because those are cleary locusts flying into the church when the doors blow open.
In the audio interview on the new Bluray, William Peter Blatty tells a humrous story about wanting more ROSE PETALS to do a second take of the scene where the wind blows the doors open. I guess the guy will argue with Mr. Blatty as well!
- - - - - - - I am not a fan. I just happen to enjoy movies. Fans are embarrassing.
Bastasch8647, you know, watching "The Exorcist III" on VHS (and even widescreen DVD) all these years, I seriously thought it was locusts swarming into the church in the opening scenes, but I just got the Scream Factory special edition blu-ray (plus I have a bigger 50" HD TV now, lol) and can clearly see that you are right, and that it is NOT locusts, but a bunch of leaves blowing into the open church doors. Thanks for trying to correct me on this, and sorry I was so defensive in my stance in thinking I was right about it being locusts. :)
Oh, that's okay - as you know we discussed this issue on the other board today. Like I said, I guess they thought it would be easier to blow away leaves than to clean up gooey locusts...
It almost feels as if Blatty worked around Exorcist II in order to avoid any connection with it. All the characters from the book "Legion" and it's movie adaptation are the ones from the first movie that did not appear in Part II. All of those who appeared in Part II aren't even mentioned in Blatty's later work, except for a brief Regan namecheck.
Can't blame him, since Boorman went on record as despising the original story, and proved it by corrupting and degrading Blatty's carefully-etched characters and his interesting theological speculations. Heretic is a turd, and no matter of acrobatic defense-moves can justify it.
I didn't find Exorcist 2 the least bit scary. I found Exorcists 1 and 3 scary which I look for in a good horror movie. Exorcist 2 had some interesting moments but ultimately it just didn't do it for me.
