OFFICIAL DVD now available directly from Warner's webpage!

Don't waste money on bootlegs! Warner Home Video is now selling this film on DVD exclusively on their webpage from a brand new film to video transfer:

I'll second that. Warner, in a move I hope will be emulated by the other studios, is releasing films from their vaults ala carte; that is, they are only producing a dvd copy (complete with new artwork and case) as the titles are ordered for $19.99. The initial 155 titles are films that were never released on dvd before now. Warner will be rolling out new titles, approximately 20 at a time, with the goal of releasing 350 by Christmas and eventually their entire 6,000+ title catalog.

The initiative is called Warner Archive. (www.warnerarchive.com)

I really appreciate both of you pointing this out for us. It's about time the studios catch on that their really missing an opportunity.

My copy of AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE has just arrived. Mixed review.

First off... let me say that I'm GRATEFUL that this gem has finally become available! My VHS copy was just about worn out!

From a technical standpoint... the DVD could have been better.

As is common with many older single strip Technicolor films, AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE suffers from considerable color shift; it's VERY heavy on red. Flesh tones range from bright pink to almost purple, and red objects in the scenes seem to almost jump out at you.

The release of the classic Korean war movie THE HUNTERS no doubt suffered from the same age related problem, but in that case they saw fit to digitally remaster the film for it's DVD release, and it looks great. Unfortunately, they didn't see fit to give AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE the same treatment.

The color can be corrected on your display with a change in it's setup, but IMHO that shouldn't be necessary.

That's the only real complaint that I have with the release.

I feel that I MUST praise the audio transfer... it was good on the original film, but I'd swear that it was processed to improve signal to noise ratio.

I'm glad to say that the release is letterboxed... somebody made the excellent decision to NOT play Pan and Scan games with it!

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being perfect... I'd call this release a good, solid 8 to 9. It's WELL WORTH your purchase!

BUT the big question is : was it released in the original widescreen aspect ratio of 1:85:1 ?

Nowhere does it say that.

reply

Yes, it's 16x9 full frame (meaning it's either 1.78:1 0r 1.85:1).
