Does anyone know why this isn't on TV anymore?

I guess I'll just have to buy it but I loved watching it as a kiddo. I'd like my kids to see it too.

I don't know. The last time I saw it was maybe '92 on Nickelodeon. The kids these days probably just don't appreciate the Muppets.

I love that almost thirty years after they originally aired it, HBO is still playing it.

This was awesome, Tale of the Bunny Picnic, and Fraggle Rock. Gosh I wish I had HBO again, these were awesome.

This is one of those christmas specials that I grew up with that has almost disappeared from TV. (along with Santa Claus is Coming to Town, and I've seen Rudolph on TV half a dozen times WITHOUT the isle of misfit toys included, also missing is The Little Drummer Boy, and who knows what else!). I now own it on DVD because when I was a kid it was my #1, favorite christmas special. This has become a holiday tradition for my wife and I, and my best friends and my godson (their son). This is pure holiday classic at it's best. For some reason, TV Execs nowadays seem to think that this kind of 'simple' holiday fare isn't what people want to see, so they seem to exclude it more and more. (Last year, I didn't see 'Frosty the Snowman' aired a single time, I might have missed it, but it didn't air on network TV as far as I know, we'll see this year'. But these older 'muppet' and 'claymation' holiday specials seem to be rapidly on the way out in preference for newer holiday specials - regardless of how stupid the newer holiday specials are.

Does anyone care for fruit..... or dessert?

I wish they would show that show instead of the new Emmet Otter Christmas special. Now he's living in the ghetto,Eminem is doing his voice (like we need a hard core gangster rapper doing a kid's special!) and it's full of rap/hip-hop. I believe hard core rap artists have NO place in providing music/voices in kid's movies and t.v. specials. Why not a country or rock and roll Emmet?

reply

yeah this is true,

but you have to look at the icons that kid's look up to now days. no kid that age is gonna watch emmet otter's christmas with keith urban as the voice. (well some kids might, but the majority of the t.v. viewing youth are not). i didn't know they had one with where he lived in a "ghetto" and (i assume) tried out for the talent show with a hip-hop group. but why should rap artist's not have a voice in kid's t.v. specials? the kid's need the story, follow me? if they are to watch a show with eminem's voice instead of faith hill's so be it. they're watching it right? put your pride aside, you had emmet when you were younger, hell you still have him now. can't it be their turn to have emmet, maybe it's a different one than you want, but they're still getting the story, and as i said before isn't that what the story is about? give these "hard core" rappers a chance to do some good in the world if you say they shouldn't be there.

I just bought the DVD and came to this site to read the info on this fondly remembereed childhood annual event. Poor old Jim Hensen.

I have had this on my TIVO wish list, but no joy. I happened to be in Target just now picking up a few last minute stocking stuffers for the 4 and 7 year olds when I happened upon this on DVD. I wasn't loking for it, I didn't even know it was on DVD. And it is "The "director's cut" no less with extra never before seen footage! How cool is that? And only about ten bucks. I bought a copy for my kids and one for my sister's too. We all remember and loved it and lament it's disapperance from TV, but apparently somebody thinks there is enough market for it to create a special DVD edition. Judging by the posts here, I bet they're right!

They remade this with rappers (Eminem, Keith Urban)? Is this out on DVD/Video yet?

Ah, so, in other words, they ruined it.
