David Lochary

I was always under the impression that David Lochary's death was what prevented him from being in this movie. But, according to IMDB, he died a couple of months after this film premiered in Baltimore. Was it his drug issues that caused him to drift away from Dreamland and miss this film? Does anyone know the full story?

I thought the same thing as well, that David died before the filming of Desperate Living, but Waters was never one to divulge the painful detais of anything that went wrong in his life. No one else has ever spoken of it, but you have an excellent point about his drug usage tearing him apart from the rest of the crowd.

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked.

He does imply that, yes, but David died a few weeks AFTER Desperate Living had been premiered.

Remember, John was getting off drugs when he wrote this movie while David's drug use was getting worse. More than likely he just glossed it over for Shock Value as he didn't want to go into ugly details.

John said in an interview when asked "what happened, why wasn't David in this film"? "PCP is what happened to David". Apparently David had a terrible PCP habit during this period and was apparently unfit to work, unfortunately he also died as a result of his drug not long after.

From the grapevine I had my ear to, it was that Lochary let the sudden 'stardom' get to him. Demanding more money from John for the success of Pink Flamingos, and stating he helped create much of the story and was Divine's 'agent'. I think everyone just got pissed off at Dave, and he died disillusioned and alone.
