favorite John Waters film

Not only is this my favorite John Waters film, it is my ALL-TIME NUMBER ONE MOVIE....FOREVER. When I watched it for the first time, I howled (laughter, not wolf) for the first 25 minutes. In fact, I think the first 20 minutes of this film (using the term loosely here) are among the funniest ever.

I am a huge fan of John Waters. And yes, I do understand that most of the nuts who like him prefer Female Trouble or Pink Flamingos to Desperate Living.

Does anyone else share my opinion?

Its a tough question to answer which Water's film is the best, but it surely isn't Cecil B Demented. I'm a huge fan of Divine's work, but I have to agree that Desperate Living is the best. I seriously don't remember when I stopped laughing during the film. So even if you don't know how, " JUST GET IT "

cmon, cecil isnt bad at all! give it a little more time, itll grow in you (it happened to me... just listen to the waters commentary on the film, it really helps)

Edith Massey was my favorite John Waters regular. Desperate Living is special to me because it features her biggest part ever. But I'd have to say Polyester is my all around favorite Water's film.
"WE HONOR YOU QUEEN CARLOTTA"

well, i think edies best role is cuddles in polyester. i dont know, it sure is her loveliest role, dont you think so?

reply

I agree with you.......Cuddles was the perfect role for Edith Massey. As a non-actor, she's more believable when she plays a sixty-year-old retarded debutante. Everytime I see a fat woman squeeze into a dress I get nostalgic.

Purr Francine.....purr, purr francine...

i agree its hard to say which of his films is the best. i dont know which one is my personal favorite, but every single time ive watched 'desperate living' i feel like its the best one... but then i watch one of the others, and think thats just as good... i read somewhere that the reason 'desperate' is so great is because, since divine isnt in it, all of the other dreamland girls got the chance to shine brighter... im not sure thats fair, but they definitely got more substancial roles: edith, mink, bonnie, susan, and of course jean hill, who became one of my favorites the second i laid eyes on her. why hasnt john used her since polyester? damn!

reply

Sir,
I really don't think you want to see the skeleton of a women who died in
1984 on the screen. Is that a good enought reason for not using her in a film

reply

Huh... Jean Hill was on "A Dirty Shame", she's not THAT dead... :)

reply

I totally agree. This is the MOST WONDERFUL movie of all time. I wish John Waters still made movies like this.

This is the first film where John Waters actually created a standalone world in Mortville. They built that thing out in the woods outside Baltimore.
And what a world! It was so much fun watching Mink Stole's sensibilities being trampled. Her reaction to the female gloryhole was hysterical.

Female Trouble is another fave. I saw it twenty-five years ago, and David Lochary's line reading of "The police?...will not be involved" is still, for me, one of the most shocking moments on film. And MV Pierce's "I'll have two chicken breasts please" followed by Lochary's "We never eat any form of noodle, but I'll have a little to be polite" can be watched over and over again.

Before she died, Edie Massey had a little shop in Fells Point. You'd go in and say, "How are you Edie?," and she'd say something like, "Aw, hon. I'm feelin hot and cold but I already been through the change."

I am in complete agreement with the original post by ionca. I have never seen anything funnier than this film in my entire life. Mink Stole's opening rant is sheer genius; I had to watch it about a dozen times before I caught all the dialogue as I was laughing too hard to hear it! Every character is great, but my all-time favorite is Mole. She is my role model! How many problems could be solved in our lives if we just yelled at obnoxious people, "You listen to me, wacko! I'm about ready to use that hatchet face of yours as a punching bag! So sit down and SHHHUUUUUUUTTT UP!" I honor Queen Carlotta, but I adore John Waters!
