Felt sorry for Edith Massey

This movie has some real funny moments, and I liked the idea of Mortville, but I kind of felt sorry for Edith Massey. I wish they'd left the sex scenes with her out. I sensed she was actually quite uncomfortable in those scenes. She's incredibly funny in the scene in Female Trouble where she's nude for a few seconds (not a sex scene), but in this film, I sensed she was uncomfortable. She stumbles over words at one point, and I think she's uneasy.

Shut up! My blue blood is ready to boil! I am sick of listening to your bitching. Next time you feel a fit coming on, go outside and bitch!

reply

Okay. What does that have to do with what I posted? It sounds vaguely like a quote from the film.

They are quotes from the film.

Ditto what the other person said. She liked doing these things in these movies. John Waters talks about it on commentaries. She just always stumbled on her lines and gave an awkward delivery.

It's funny, I don't remember any stumbling like that in Female Trouble or Polyester. I understand she wasn't a "quick study," as Cookie Mueller said about her in her memoirs. But it seems like in Female Trouble and Polyester, Waters took the necessary time to make sure she could do her scenes properly and comfortably. I didn't sense that in the sex scenes in DL. I think that has something to do with why I don't like this film as much as those. I haven't seen Multiple Maniacs or Mondo Trasho yet.

Thanks for your comments.

The talk in the sex scenes were improvised according to John in the DVD commentary, which is probably why she stumbled.

Doesn't she always stumble her lines though?
I thought she was great!

I met Mink Stole back in 2007. When I quoted some funny dialouge between her and Edith Massey from Female Trouble, she laughed, rolled her eyes and said that Edith took so many takes in that scene, the company thought they would never get it in the can. She always had trouble memorizing her lines.

Waters said she loved doing this film because she got to be all dolled up and wear extravagant costumes and clothing - well, they were extravagant to her. She got to go around and parade like a Queen. It beats sitting in a baby pen in your underwear screaming about eggs.

She may not have stumbled in Female Trouble, but Waters says she did feel uncomfortable with the lace-up catsuit. Although she quickly got over it. Supposedly she wore the original one out and had to have another made.
