My Fondest Memory From When I Watched THE DEEP in 1977:

when Treece came out of the water at the end, the public cheered wildly. Robert Shaw was really loved in Puerto Rico; 'tis such a tragedy that he died so young.

I've always liked Robert Shaw. In this film, he fit the role very well. In fact, this movie would have been equally effective had it been a mono e mono between Gossett and Shaw in their hunt for the treasure, and leave out the Nolte and Bisset characters. Their characters aren't that interesting or necessary.
