Extra Footage

I read somewhere that NBC added 53 minutes to the film when it was shown on TV. Where can I find a copy of this extended cut?

reply

This has been discussed many times before, and it is valid that you post it again. Many of us wish we knew where to get a copy of this version. It was aired on TBS and TNT throughout the 90s but has not been seen since. I was hoping AMC could bring it back like they did with Earthquake, and Halloween II TV versions, but nothing has happened.

On the alternate versions section of this film's webpage, there is a bit of info on some of the scenes. But not much is known or spoken about.

RATS! As I wish I could see this film in uncut form as well.

One scene I remember - which I was wondering where it went when I just watched it on DVD - is a flashback scene in which Treece (as a boy) finds Coffin washed up on the beach after the shipwreck.

reply

If I remember correctly, the film opens with this scene. It's featured in the Marvel comic book as well. Coffin is trapped in a piece of wreckage (like a coffin, get it?) and Treece saves him. Shaw has a line in the film that refers to this. I also remember the elevator fight scene (as well as the one with Kevin) being much longer. I think it cross cuts with Shaw killing someone with a hose.

This cut was shown on network TV for the original premiere (late 70s or early 80s). I wish I knew it was being shown on cable; I would've taped it.

reply

It aired on February 10 and 11 of 1980. I gave it a brief mention in my diary, err, I mean, journal, which is what brought me here. My review, which was written when I was thirteen, is as follows:

February 10: I did watch Part One of "The Deep". It stunk.

February 11: Part Two of "The Deep" was dull.

Dear all those in search of the extra footage,

My dad has told me ever since we watched this movie on cable and again when I rented it for him, that the movie starts out with the Goliath getting caught and sunk by a hurricane and the sole surviver, Coffin, being washed up on the beach, half buried in sand. Then comes a young Robert Shaw running up the beach and asking the the half buried man if he was dead. Then proceeds to save his life.

That is he only other version I have heard of and was starting to thing my dad was confusing what he read in the book with what he saw in the movie. However, after hearing the accounts of the others whom have seem the extended cut I not only believe my dad but would like to acquire a copy of the extended cut and watch it wit him. Based upon the information read in the post I am replying too, it was aired in the 1990's on TBS and TNT. That is very important because it tells me who has the extended copy and if we all get a petition together and ask very nicely... maybe, just maybe Ted Turner, owner of TBS and TNT might see fit in airing the extended version or for a fee allowing us to purchase a couple copies on DVD.

If this sounds like a good idea to the people whom have seen the extended version and would like to see it again. To people like me who have never seen the extended version and thought it didn't exists; thought the ones who had seen it were just stoned and letting their imaginations run. Only now having there eyes opened. I would be only too glad to sign a request to Turner Network Television to see the extended version of The Deep. If there is anyone else who would like to see it and maybe knows someone in the Turner Network reply to this post and lets see if we can get it done. Good luck to all of us, Courtney Phillips

It's usually the other way around, the DVD has all the good stuff and TV is the one to butcher a movie.

I bought the DVD a couple of years ago (Wal Marts $5.00 bin), but before that I remember seeing it on channels like AMC, TNT, TBS etc.. I don't remember seeing any of the longer versions you guys are talking about when seeing it on TV though.

If this is true, the TV versions must've clocked in at about three hours (giving the addition of commercials), the DVD comes in at two hours and four minutes.

reply

The longer version was airedin the early 90s when longer versions were still aired, albeit in syndicated form. I saw the opening of the longer version, the very first part of the opening anyway, around 1997 and that was the last I ever saw or heard of the TV version being shown

I e-mailed AMC about showing it, but that was 2 years ago, and they never replied. We can still try though, can't we?

reply

why would you want AMC to show it? It would be edited and in full screen. TMC would be the perfect choice.

reply

I have been desperate to find the extended or Director's cut version. My father was actually in the cut scenes that were shown in the extended version.

Needless to say, of what my parents told me as they were staying at the hotel they filmed at along with where the cast and crew stayed, Jacqueline Bisset did make every single guy on the Bermuda Island salivate.

reply

It appears to me the extra footage is the same thing shown twice.

reply

No it isn't. Actually, the extra scenes help the movie out. They add more depth to the movie. The reason those scenes were cut is because they would have made the movie really long. It wasn't because they were unnecessary. Quite the opposite.
For anyone who read the book, the extra scenes include the notion that St. David Islanders are not nice people, the question of trust between Coffin and the main stars, the detail of Treece's marriage and his wife's death. There is alot more interaction between Treece and Gail, because she comes to know of his wife, padded footage, unheard musical score, etc, etc, etc.
What scenes were your father in? The scenes in the TV version mainly consisted of the four or five main actors.

Young man is angry! Girl is afraid! He wants to get high, she wants to get paid! City's Burning!

You're in luck. The new footage is to be released on blu-ray!

There never was a Special 3 hour edition to begin with! AGH! How angering! How do they expect to be able to explain that and have people within reason understand!

I hope they have a logical explanation!!!!

reply

Hi seanmc-7.
Please check your personal messages.

You can't handle it. Get me Bruce Lee!
Ehh... Bruce Lee is dead.
Then get his brother!!!

reply

Yeah, PM'ed you as well.

reply

Am definitely interested in acquiring copies of this. Please advise me as to how to go about it. I wish to remain as legal as possible. Take Care. Phil.

Hi seanme-7 id like to take you up on your kind offer of a copy of the full version of the deep - I have sent you a private message.

reply

I saw it up the theatres originally and the extended version on TV. Seriously--the extended version is TOO long. It runs over three hours and nothing of any huge interest was cut. The movie works just fine as it is--but I'm glad they're releasing a somewhat complete version for people who want it. The reason they've been so slow to release it is that "The Deep" wasn't the big hit they thought it would be.

reply

They could have cut 30-40 minutes of people swimming around under water aimlessly, and then put in the backstory. Boring movie.

reply

Go watch "Into The Blue" and leave us to enjoy the better film.

reply

Well said!

reply

Then they must have thought it was going to be massive as the movie was the seventh highest grossing movie of 1977.

reply

PLEASE CHECK EMAIL- THANK YOU

reply

I know it's been many months since you posted this, but I wouldn't mind having a copy of the extended version of "The Deep" on 2 dvds. Slower speed will preserve most of the quality. You can send me details to my email [email protected]. Appreciate it. Thanks again.

reply

Hi Seanm-7 I have already mailed you but got no reply. I'm keen for a copy of the full length version of this film if you are still offering to Burn DVD's of it

Waiting for your reply in anticipation

Cinemageddon has the four hour ABC version.

How do you go about accessing Cinemageddon? Is it an open website? Is this Cinemageddon.org? Cinemageddon.net? Cinemageddon.? Would you be willing to burn me a copy? Take Care. Phil.

reply

Saw the Subject "Extra Footage" and was hoping it was during the opening credits! ;)
