After 33 years...

"The Deep" remains as boring as it was in 1977. Make that stupefyingly boring, given some of the talent involved. If someone other than Peter Benchley had written the book (and Jaws, the movie, hadn't been such a hit), this piece of drivel would have never made it past concept stage.

Amazing thing is the IMDb spoiler tags identify this movie filling the Horror/Mystery/Adventure/Thriller genres. If only it had been any of those...

IT was, just not the way you see it. One man's(if you are a man) dislike is another's treasure (no pun intended) and this happens to be one of my favorites.

Your post is irrelevant and does not back itself up. Nor do you provide any insight on specifics or commentary on any of the narrative. You are simply whining and I can't converse with someone who doesn't have the social intellect to at least be easier instead of shooting from your emotions.

It is a "thriller", imo, just not very thrilling. But good entertainment.

How can something be singularly Thriller?

Jaws for instance is a horror/action/thriller.

I haven't seen The Deep (In fact I've been trying to find out if it was more action or horror), but I just felt compelled to respond to this.

Yes, I agree completely. Tried to watch this the other night and couldn't believe how utterly boring it was. I remember when it came to theaters and it was kind of a hit ONLY because it was from a book written by Peter Benchley. Because of Jaws' fame, it did pretty well at the box office. I remember trying to read Jaws after I saw the movie and after the initial shark attack, this book was a complete yawner. Steven Spielberg made Jaws into the hit that it was - the book was awful. The Deep was awful too. I'm glad I didn't waste my time reading the book.

There was one spectacular redeeming quality about this film - Jackie Bisset's beautiful chest!

Better than "Tentacles" at least.

DeepHurting, your analysis of the movie is horribly flawed. Maybe you should stick to movies starring the Three Stooges. That's more your speed.

Probably just your life context. This is a great movie to me, but then I love diving and I love Bermuda....

I knew this movie my whole life, watched it again with my wife last night because I always liked it, and Ienjoyed watching it again.

This day and age, moviegoers don't "get" strategic silience. They need constant action of they easily slip into boredom.

Saying that, I wouldn't expect a 1977 movie that was boring to you back then to get more interesting now.

1977 is a part of my DNA – though not quite as much as the years '74 to '76, which were killer – and this film represents the mood of the era quite well. The story's not exceptional, but the performances and photography make it worthwhile. 7/10 stars from me.

This movie was roundly panned as boring back in 1977 by every critic of note.

Some people like it; some dont, just like any other movie. I like it, and i could not care less what the critics said back then, or now

Never pay any attention to what critics say. No statue has ever been erected in honour of a critic.

I can't agree with you... I loved this movie the day I saw it in the theater, and I still love it... you found it boring, but that doesn't mean it WAS boring... different strokes for different folks... know what I mean?

... the hardest thing in this world is to live in it...

Just because it isn't filled with explosions, robots, and aliens, doesn't make it a boring movie. Perhaps today's ADD-addled audience just can't understand a thoughtful thriller, with fleshed out characters and a good story. I'm sure you'll be posting rave reviews of the next Transformers movie... :)
