Looks like a basketball player...

This is how Robert Shaw describes Lou Gossett the bad guy, ain't that a bit racialist?

"Ain't" that a bit...stupid?

"...if that was off, I'd be whoopin' your ass up and down this street." ~ an irate Tarantino

It's how Nick Nolte describes Gossett, not Shaw. And it's a fact that there were a lot of basketball players who looked like that (i.e. shaved head, tall, skinny, intimidating.)

"...Every minute passing I wanna hold you. Every minute gone is too long a time."

What is racialist???

After Lou graduated from NYU he was drafted by the New York Knicks. So it was no stretch to be described as a basketball player.

No, it was Nick Nolte who said that, to Robert Shaw.

I just assumed the scriptwriters were being coy about saying, "He's black."
Wasn't the only clunky bit of dialogue in the film, though.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

To me it displays the clumsiness at attempting political correctness. Obviously to describe him as black probably felt racist to the writer and they changed it to that, which winds up sounding strange and even a great actor like Nolte (not Shaw) delivers it in an awkward fashion.
