Remake?

This seems like a no-brainer for Hollywood or an independent producer to remake. They've already remade Last House on the Left, I Spit on Your Grave, and Straw Dogs.

Don't forget EMBRACE OF THE VAMPIRE, THE WICKER MAN, THE FOG, CARRIE, ROSEMARY'S BABY(?), THE LEGEND OF LIZZIE BORDEN, etc..

As far as "on DVD" goes, there are quite a few older movies being re-released on DVD, and some on Blu-Ray, like PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN, and a lot of others from SHOUT!, SHOUT FACTORY, MILL CREEK ENTERTAINMENT, and quite a few more.

The problem is finding out who is releasing what...

And, there is the 'trend' to modify and release other movies, some claiming to be a "director's cut" that is as much as 20 minutes shorter than the theatrical release (REVENGE with Kevin Costner for one), different versions that are "enhanced, with new footage" like many of the STAR WARS series, and even ET.
One that has been very worthwhile is the Blu-Ray of NIGHTBREED, with quite a bit more footage, and a decent set of special features. When I saw the theatrical release, the entire movie 'felt' like there was a lot of "something missing", and the Blu-Ray solves that. It includes the explanation that the original release was cut into a "slasher film", leading to the viewer's confusion and merely an average slasher film.

I wonder if the remakes need the permission/rights of the original film producers, writers, music, and all that? I've read that the movie VALLEY GIRL re-release on DVD was held up for about ten years to get the rights to the music in the movie...
