So far that if they made a new version and followed the book I don't think you could actually call it a remake.

Always thought Snake Plissken was based on Hell Tanner

If the filmmakers had stuck to the book, they would have gotten the jump on the Mad Max/Snake Plissken style character by several years. It could have been a true classic film. I don't know why they went with the missle silo personnel story. I guess an outlaw biker antihero was still too risky for a big-budget Hollywood protagonist in 1977.

I think Adam Roarke, who appeared in several entertaining Biker exploitation movies in the late '60s, would have made a great Hell Tanner.

With AI/CGI technology available today it's very possible to rework this movie to follow the book faithfully within budget, which wasn't possible in '77. Maybe use a different title to make the movie a stand-alone release.
