Two parts or one whole movie?

Is the new DVD edited into two parts or as one movie ?

reply

Two parts, but not as broadcast so they're without end credits on part one or opening titles on part two.

I am not sure what the previous poster was talking about. When this was broadcast in December of 1977 it was shown all on the same evening. There was a brief intermission where they went to the BBC logo for a few minutes and then returned to the story but there WAS NOT a set of credits before the intermission or a reprisal of the opening sequence at the beginning of act two. The DVD shows it as it did that night except for the BBC logo break.

I guess maybe it depends what PBS station you were watching. The station I saw it on showed it over 2 nights. PBS stations are obviously local in each city, so it's possible that it was shown both ways.

My initial post was about its first airing in the UK but you are quite right falloutboy73. Its initial showing in the US was in March of 1978 on the PBS Great Performances series, where it was shown all in one night. After that individual PBS stations would air it (many of them at Halloween) as they saw fit. Some showed it all on one night, yours did it over two nights and I have read on the message boards that some even did it over three (yikes!). Though I never saw it this way I feel sure that they simply grafted the Opening and closing credits onto the beginning and end of each section that they aired. I feel lucky that I never had to see it split that way and now the DVD allows us all to see it the way that it was meant to be seen.

We were one of the cities that had in three parts originally. To make it worse, the episodes were weekly. When it proved to be popular our PBS station used as a weekend late nite "event" during there fundraisers. It wasn't until Halloween 1980 that it aired uninterupted.

This was originally shown in three 50 minute episodes on consecutive nights, then repeated as a 'film' only a few days later. This 'joined up' showing was as described by mad19571. It has more recently been shown in two roughly 75 minute parts.

Recently where? It was originally shown in one night. It was later repeated split into more digestible portions. I'm not sure how many times it was repeated on the Beeb but certainly no more than three.

reply

Yep, that's correct. It was split into three parts in '77. I was only a little kid and I wasn't allowed to watch the first part but saw parts two and three. I only finally saw the whole thing when the BBC repeated this in the early 90's.
