Cinema Listings 1966-1974 (Sex Cinemas Pt.1)

Founded in 1952 Continental Film Review magazine reached its artistic zenith in the late 60’s and early 70’s with its intelligent look at European cinema from Arthouse masters Fellini and Bergman to Italian horror films and thrillers. However the magazine wasn’t completely unaware that by that time the word ‘Continental’ had also become synonymous with risqué foreign fare to its domestic audience. Tending to the need by the late Sixties their pages were liberally graced with nudity as well as covers featuring female sex stars. Towards the back pages the tone tended to become less highbrow; George Harrison Marks regularly advertised his glamour home movies from the back pages where you could also find adverts for Wife Swappers era swinging groups. CFR also ran its own book service which consisted of sex paperbacks, ‘educational’ manuals, the novels of Percy and Baby Love, and self explanatory illustrated S&M orientated tomes like The Leather Scene and The Kinky Crowd. From a historical perspective the most interesting aspect of Continental Film Review was its cinema listings section, which covered the sex cinemas, the membership only club cinemas and late night horror double-bills. Sadly by the late Seventies the magazine had become a shadow of its former self, too much coverage of American blockbusters tended to make it undistinguishable from many film magazines on the market. The coverage of sex films was often relegated to several cut and paste pages which resembled a punk fanzine more than a professional magazine. The listings section had also been dropped.

Below are many of the big sex cinemas in London and the Provinces, most of which were part of cinema chains like The Jacey, Classic or Continentale. Ultimately Continental Film Review was a reflection of a time when art, horror and sex films often rubbed shoulders in cinema programming. Although it is fair to say these cinema’s main diet was sex films, eclecticism, especially with regards to the Antony Balch connected Jacey Cinema Chain, could also be the name of the game. Many of these cinemas became stars of exploitation films themselves, Jaceys pop up in films as diverse as Corruption, Diversions and Adventures of a Taxi Driver, while the Classic Piccadilly forms part of Mr Black Gloves’ perverted daydream in Take an Easy Ride.
