Who was the actor seated next to George DiCenzo?

Can anyone identify the actor seated to the left (his left) of George DiCenzo during the Air Force briefing scene? I've looked through all the credits and I still can't identify him. He's the one in the suit and tie who states that he believes in "life elsewhere."

That is Matt Emery, listed under his acting credits as "support leader" for Close Encounters. I find it strange that IMDB has him listed as working in the art department of recent movies. Probably another Matt Emery that is being confused with the actor who was in Close Encounters.

Thanks! I'm curious how you know it's him, though. For the life of me, I cannot find any pictures of him anywhere.

You're right about his IMDb entry being strange. His acting credits start in 1966 and go through Close Encounters in 1977 and then suddenly start back up in 2000 until almost the present day. At about the same time (circa 2000), his Art Department (et cetera) credits begin. I'm sure there have been mix-ups with his identity. There are numerous "Matt Emery" entries and, no doubt, some of them are in error.

I have a book about the making of Close Encounters by Ray Morton that is amazingly in depth about everything related to the movie. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to know more about the movie. The chapter on casting was my only confirmation that the actor was Matt Emery, because like you, I can't find any pictures of him. The book mentioned that his other significant movie credit was a role in the Barbara Steisand movie "Funny Lady" in 1975.
