Just a bunch of jerks.

reply

They should be thought of as the pre-Internet version of trolls. Causing drama for the hell of it.

reply

They were inter-galactic pranksters with a heart of gold.

Think about some of the things that some of us do:

Dragging fish out of the sea with sharp hooks attached to lines. Then put them to one side to drown. Rush around the sea in boats disturbing the sealife.

How does this look to them?

reply

Sometimes we latch onto them with hooks just to throw them back into the water. Weird.

Exactly!

The ETs were just angling some human fish!

"Oh, we can put these ones back on that green watery planet in about 30 years. They wont be missed."

reply

Why did they take these people? Were they just being nice outside the ship and performing experiments on the humans once they got inside? I don't trust aliens who kidnap little boys out of doggie doors.

Correct. Which is why they were not extraterrestrials. At all.

Bear with me if one may.

Dr. Josef Allen Hynek was barely seen on screen (and he was there as a representative of the mainstream ufologists).

Dr. Jacques Fabrice Vallée (in the flesh of a rightfully acclaimed artist in his ownb merit) is a major character that leads us all through the film, reaching the right conclusions about the right time.

Does not look like mister Spielberg sides with the mainstream side of things there.

My (I admit, nearly lone) interpretation of the aforementioned factoid is that we are given a sleight of hand by the movie maker. It is upside-down. The popular view, represented by Hynek, is shown to be utterly unattainable while overtly displayed, while the undercurrent view ostensibly defended by Vallée through his entire UFO career (among other serious students of the matter such as the most missed John Keel) is subtly (and yet not so subtly) shown to us in plain view whenever Truffaut is onscreen.

These entities are not extraterrestrials (albeit they do show up outside of the planet as well) and we have no complete model publicly to assess what-and-who they may be.

They are rather mysterious.

And, as the poster pointed out quite correctly,

utterly insane.

Nuckin Futs...

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

reply

They were also kidnappers, child abductors who took little kids away from their parents, and were committing human slave trade crimes. They also participated in the murder of those cops who drove off a cliff chasing them.

They should be tried and hung for what they did to those WW2 pilots. Snatching them out of 1944, then time zooming them ahead and plonking them out in 1977. They will go home and their wives will be all old, maybe remarried and the new husband will be all po'd at the return of the hot, young husband. They destroyed Roy and Ronnie's marriage. What domestic disruptions! They all looked alike and were nondescript with their vacant smiles. They just barged in with their disco wrecking ball spaceship and wreaked havoc all over earth. They had no respect for our national parks either, in choosing Devil's Tower as their rendezvous point. All those army trucks and heavy equipment crushing the natural flora and fauna.

I blame them for the death of that sweet little bird too.

Dumbass aliens

Why did they “sing” to the people in Northern India, dropping an invitation to WYOMING in their heads? How were all those people supposed to get across the world to Wyoming?
