Why do you think the cop reacted so badly when his partners caught him with the dominatrix ? It seemed like the sort of thing they would laugh about at their next drunken session by the lake.
I know he looked pathetic but if he had laughed it off instead of crying and pleading I thihnk he would be alive today.
Because the movie had chose to omit most of the book's important parts, it doesent explain how the guy went to see the dominatrix because he was troubled for a very long time after he worked as a juvenile officer and saw kids getting abused in the ghetto and then when he failed to act on time, an abusive mother killed off her stepson and he felt the blame.

The injuries sustained by the customers of this dominatrix will last for a very long time and leave lasting scars after healing. Hopefully had he lived he would have had a good response when the doctor asked where those scars came from since they weren't documented in his last physical.
During my working career health physicals were annual so wounds like he sustained would not disappear soon
